Besides the high-rise apartment buildings, the modern streets of Ho Chi Minh City still have green areas with a purely agricultural working life such as Thoi An, Thanh Xuan, Hiep Thanh wards... in District 12. This is an area where ponds and marshes for growing water mimosa are concentrated.
Previously, water mimosa sold in Ho Chi Minh City was mostly grown in the Southwest region. For the past ten years, water mimosa has been grown by people in the outskirts of District 12 and Hoc Mon District.
The profession of growing water mimosa in District 12 was formed when the previous person taught the next person, gradually this place became a "water mimosa village". Mainly people here have fields or rent fields to grow water mimosa. During harvest season, holidays... farmers will work day and night to supply enough vegetables for purchasing points such as wholesale markets, restaurants, eateries... in Ho Chi Minh City.
Rau nhut (or rau rut) belongs to the legume family, grows on the surface of ponds and lakes. The leaves of this plant are similar to tamarind leaves but smaller, the thick stem is divided into segments like buoys to help the plant float on the water surface. Rau nhut has a chewy, crunchy taste and is often used to cook hot pot, sour soup, fish soup... because of its characteristic aroma.
Ponds for growing water mimosa often require ropes for the plants to cling to and grow. This plant is easy to grow, the stems will wrap around the rope for about ten days and will produce lush leaves that can be harvested. In sunny weather, the plants will grow more evenly than in rainy weather.
Visit and take photos of the water mimosa ponds in District 12. This season, you can also see a lonely royal poinciana tree blooming bright red in a corner of the sky.
In early May, looking from above, the pond of water mimosa is at its greenest and most beautiful.
