After the success of the August Revolution, on August 28, 1945, the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam issued a Proclamation to the nation and the world on the establishment of a new Government and announced the list of a 15-member national unity cabinet headed by President Ho Chi Minh.
On September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of the provisional government, read the Declaration of Independence giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, abolishing more than 1,000 years of feudalism, crushing nearly 100 years of colonial and fascist domination, opening a new era - an era of independence and freedom for the people and the country.
In the early days of the fledgling revolutionary government, in a "critical" situation, under the leadership of the Party and beloved Uncle Ho, the Provisional Government focused on organizing, building, and consolidating the revolutionary government, fighting "internal and external enemies", and building and consolidating the country's potential; widely deployed the movements "Eliminate hunger" with "Rice jars to relieve hunger", the movement "Eliminate illiteracy" with "Popular education", the "Golden Week" movement...; organized the General Election to elect the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on January 6, 1946.
On March 2, 1946, the 1st National Assembly at its first session established a 14-member coalition resistance government and on November 9, 1946, at its second session, approved the first Constitution of our country.

Faced with the French colonialists' plot to invade our country once again, on the night of December 19, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh issued a call for national resistance, demonstrating the readiness to sacrifice and determination to protect the independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people.
Under the leadership of the Party, the Government and the people and soldiers of the whole country carried out "National Resistance, Comprehensive Resistance", focusing on stabilizing people's lives while developing increasingly strong armed forces, winning important victories in the Viet Bac Campaign - Autumn-Winter 1947, the Border Campaign - Autumn-Winter 1950, the Winter-Spring Campaign 1953-1954..., leading to the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu "famous in five continents, shaking the earth" on May 7, 1954, forcing the French colonialists to sit at the negotiating table at the Geneva Conference with our Government led by Comrade Pham Van Dong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to end the war and restore peace in Indochina.
In order to sabotage the Geneva Agreement, the French colonialists and then the US imperialists had the ambition to divide our country and set up a puppet government in the South. Under the leadership of the Party and beloved President Ho Chi Minh, the Government focused on mobilizing the strength of the entire nation in conjunction with the strength of the times, simultaneously carrying out two strategic tasks of building socialism in the North and fighting for national liberation and national unification in the South.

After the country was unified, at the first session of the 6th National Assembly (1976), the country's name was decided to be the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. From the Government's practical operations, we can draw some valuable lessons:
