The first calibration flight approaches Long Thanh airport runway

At exactly 6:09 am on September 26, the Beechcraft KingAir 300 series aircraft took off from Tan Son Nhat and headed towards Long Thanh airspace to conduct test flights. After many laps in the air, at about 6:20 am, the aircraft approached, descended and flew along runway 1 of Long Thanh airport (Long Thanh commune, Dong Nai ).

The first calibration aircraft has entered Long Thanh airport airspace.

Runway No. 1 is the first runway of Long Thanh airport, 4 km long, 70 m wide, capable of receiving modern aircraft. This is an important step in the technical completion phase, towards the goal of inaugurating the most modern international airport in Vietnam on December 19, and putting it into operation in the first half of 2026.

Previously, in late July and early August, flight evaluation flights (only flying at high altitude, not approaching the runway) were completed, creating the premise for the calibration phase.

The calibration, which will last until October 24, is carried out by the Air Traffic Management Engineering Company (ATTECH), with the participation of experts from the Czech Air Navigation Academy. The test items include the ILS/DME precision landing system, VOR/DME navigation, beacons, radar, ADS-B and related flight procedures.

At the same time, another working group coordinated with the flight crew, Tan Son Nhat Approach Control Center and Long Thanh Air Traffic Control Station to coordinate in detail the flight content, flight area, information exchange rules between pilots and controllers, and at the same time develop a regulatory plan to minimize the impact on commercial flight operations at Tan Son Nhat.

Domestic and international experts surveyed the data before the flight.

International coordination not only helps ensure objectivity, but also enhances the reputation and reliability of the entire technical inspection process. Beechcraft KingAir 300 series aircraft were selected for their maneuverability and ability to meet strict technical requirements, and are often used by many countries for calibration activities.

Calibration flights are a mandatory step to assess accuracy and safety before commercial operation, expected in mid-2026. According to ATTECH, calibration flights will be conducted both at night and during the day, under various conditions, to comprehensively assess the accuracy and stability of aviation equipment systems.

Long Thanh Airport is 5,000 hectares wide, with a total investment of nearly 337,000 billion VND, and is a key national project. Currently, runway 1 and the taxiway system have been completed; the passenger terminal is completing the roof and installing glass; the air traffic control tower and the operating blocks are also entering the final stage. The construction site has mobilized nearly 14,000 engineers and workers, striving to basically complete by the end of 2025, with an expected operation in mid-2026.
