The story of the "gatekeepers"

(Baohatinh.vn) - Going to work early and coming home late, worrying about every line of information, every number, every TV program... before publishing a news bulletin, a report, a newspaper issue, a TV program, that is the daily, silent work of the editorial secretary and editor of Ha Tinh Newspaper.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Linh (pen name Ba Linh, 1958-2004) was a diligent and sharp editorial secretary of Ha Tinh Newspaper. At that time, there was only a printed newspaper, although the work intensity was not as intense as it is now, the difficulty was that the news and articles of reporters and collaborators were often sent late, and the professionalism was not high. Reporters wrote on paper, editors had to check each stroke, then send them to the computer department for typing.

As an editor, he had to read all the news and articles, and re-evaluate whether they should be published or not before signing the decision to put them on the page and sending them to the Editorial Board for approval. Artists at that time often made pages with large hard paper, presenting news, articles, and photos by drawing frames for the pages.

During that period, the page layout and printing of the printed version depended on the computer department of the Printing Enterprise (Printing House - PV), so the Editor and Editor-in-Chief had to go to the printing house every night to re-read the issue, especially the issues with important information and events, to avoid mistakes... In addition, during that period, Mr. Ba Linh also had to meet and connect with collaborators, grasp the capacity of each reporter to be able to "put out the fire" when the article was not approved by the Editorial Board, and had to "fill in" another article.

Để có những tờ báo/tạp chí chất lượng thì không thể thiếu vai trò của những người "gác cổng".
To have quality newspapers/magazines, the role of "gatekeepers" is indispensable.

After Mr. Ba Linh passed away, Ms. Ha Duong, Mr. Nghiem Sy Dong, Mr. Nguyen Cong Thanh, Ms. Le Thi Thuy (Thuy Le), Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hai (Hai Xuan) took turns holding the positions of Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor-in-Chief. Thanks to the innovation of information technology, the control and approval of news, articles, signing for the printed newspaper page, approving the publication of electronic newspapers on CMS accounts have many changes and become more convenient.

Assigning editing and production organization to specialized departments, establishing an Electronic Newspaper Department (later merging both the Editorial Department and the Electronic Newspaper into the Publishing Department) also eased the burden on Editorial Department. However, working late and not having Sundays off became a daily routine for Editorial Department and the Publishing Department, especially for print issues published close together, with pages appearing almost on the same day (Friday and Weekend issues) and simultaneously publishing electronic newspapers 24/24.

Starting as Deputy Editor-in-Chief in March 2010, until August 2014 as Editor-in-Chief, then Head of Publishing Department, in 2020, Thuy Le was appointed Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Ha Tinh Newspaper. She is a careful, meticulous person and very sensitive to every number, place name, word and is astute, true to the nature of an Editor-in-Chief when discovering many inaccurate expressions, illogical arguments; very "tough" in proposing whether to publish or not for works that are not really of good quality, lack "weight", not beneficial to the situation of the home province. The house is far away, the children are young, the husband is stationed far away, both parents are old, Thuy Le has overcome everything, struggling, silently, attached to each issue, completing well the tasks assigned by the Editorial Board. "For me, it is a responsibility and moreover, it is a love, a passion, a desire to dedicate to the profession" - Thuy Le confided.

At the former Ha Tinh Radio and Television Station, the title of Editor-in-Chief was called Chief Editor. After the separation of the province, it was Mr. Thai Ngu, then Mr. Phan Trung Thanh who was entrusted with this important responsibility. It was still a matter of "waiting for a long time" from afternoon to evening for news to be edited, approved and submitted to the leaders for approval for broadcasting, especially in the past when science and technology were not as developed as they are now. Important news and articles, especially live TV scripts, had to be reviewed and re-reviewed throughout the system, from the characters, the events to the organization of filming and live broadcasting.

Mr. Phan Trung Thanh - former Deputy Director of Ha Tinh Radio and Television Station recalled: "The whole group of reporters, announcers, technicians with countless unforeseen situations in the production of evening TV programs, live TV, not to mention power outages, virus attacks and data loss... Editing the film all night long so the head of the editing room also had to stay there. We rarely had dinner on time with the whole family."

The job of television editor is full of hardships and worries. The head of the editorial department must visualize the content of the event and the story to edit the text appropriately. He must be a proficient writer of news, articles, and reports, and must also know the functions of the camera equipment, know how to choose the right images, layout, image axis, camera angle, lighting...

“The explanation and commentary must match the images. Good writing without matching the images is ineffective, and beautiful images without clear text are also ineffective. Many place names, people's names, positions, figures, etc. are easily mistaken, and mistakes must be corrected, and the whole team must redo them, which is very difficult,” Thanh shared.

Later, the functions and tasks were redefined and specialized departments were established. The Board of Directors assigned department heads to edit and be responsible for broadcasting their own programs. Mr. Tran Dac Tuc and Mr. Vu Thin edited the special topics section; Mr. Sinh Huong, Mr. Tran Long and Mr. Van Quoc edited the news section; Mr. Phuong Hoa and Mr. Ho Loan edited the arts - entertainment - events section; Mr. Xuan Bau edited the radio section... The work was less stressful and more specialized, but for important news, articles, documentary reports, and major events, the deputy content directors had to edit and censor.

In the era of information technology explosion, Ha Tinh Newspaper has been proactive in innovation, operating in the direction of multimedia and multi-platform to meet the increasing needs of audiences. Accordingly, the title of TKTS of the editorial offices no longer exists. Each specialized department produces and packages products, and is responsible for posting and broadcasting to the Editorial Board.

Each department leader becomes a "gatekeeper", advising and organizing the publication of newspaper issues, broadcasting radio and television programs to ensure speed, diversity, honesty, objectivity, and high reliability, contributing to building a professional, modern, and humane revolutionary press, truly the mouthpiece of the Party, the voice of the government and the people of the province.
