Jhon Cley marks 9 years without foreign players for Dong Thap - Photo: DFC
Dong Thap Club announced new player Jhon Cley. The player born in 1994 used to play for Cong An Ha Noi Club (2023-2024) and Hoang Anh Gia Lai (2023-2024) on loan for half a season.
For Dong Thap Club, this Brazilian striker is the first foreign player after 9 years of the team struggling with domestic football.
Since the 2015 season, VFF has not allowed first division teams to use foreign players. By 2025, the tournament will "open" again with only 1 foreign player slot for teams to register.
10 years have passed, making it 9 years that Dong Thap Club has had no foreign players after being relegated from V-League 2016. Returning to the first division, Dong Thap football set a record of 5 times being promoted and 5 times being relegated immediately.
Despite being relegated to the first division, Dong Thap football still cannot maintain its original identity. In the 2020 season, this team lost to Long An , so it was relegated to the 2021 National Second Division.
In the 2023 Second Division season, Dong Thap football has just won the right to return to professional level at the 2024 First Division level. From there, they maintain the movement in this division to match the investment level.
Jhon Cley is expected to contribute to Dong Thap football. He scored 11 goals for Hanoi Police. Later, Cley went to Indonesia to play for Bekasi City and Persis Solo and then to the Series C in Brazil.
The foreign players wearing the Dong Thap Club shirt in the 2016 season were Jerferson Valentim and Diego Silva, before that in phase 1 were strikers Marko Simic and Udo Fortune and then Samson Kpenosen.
With more foreign players, Dong Thap fans have more reasons to follow the team. Coach Phan Thanh Binh has more ideas to build tactics in his second season as coach.
