On October 2, New Zealanders began early voting to elect a new government before the official election day on October 14.

According to RNZ, in a statement, election official Karl Le Quesne said that 400 polling stations opened on October 2. Pre-election voting is increasingly popular and in 2020, 68% of votes were cast in advance. Electronic and in-person overseas voting at embassies was also conducted last week for registered voters.

New Zealand's opposition National Party is currently leading in opinion polls but is unlikely to gain enough support to form a new government on its own and will likely have to form a coalition with at least one smaller party.
