The Sun newspaper, citing Belgian sources, said Radja Nainggoland was arrested on Monday morning (local time). The Belgian player's home was also searched in a large-scale raid in Antwerp and Brussels.
“The investigation concerns the suspected smuggling of cocaine from South America into Europe, via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium. We can confirm that the RN footballer is deprived of his liberty,” the Brussels prosecutor’s office said.
Nainggolan's lawyer is working with the investigation agency. Currently, the former Belgian player has not been charged. The prosecution did not reveal the extent of Nainggolan's involvement in the drug trafficking network.
Nainggolan played 30 matches for the Belgian national team.
Nainggolan, born in 1988, was a Belgian national team player. He played 30 matches and scored 6 goals during the period considered the "golden generation" when the team held the No. 1 position on the FIFA rankings.
During his club career, Nainggolan played for three famous Serie A teams, Cagliari, AS Roma and Inter Milan, at his peak.
At the end of his career, the midfielder born in 1988 went to Indonesia to play. He played for the Bhayangkara Club for 2 years. However, Nainggolan only played 10 matches. In early 2025, the former Inter Milan player returned to Belgium to play for the Lokeren-Temse team in the 3rd division.
In addition to his Belgian nationality, Nainggolan is also of Indonesian descent (his father is Indonesian). The midfielder is eligible to play for the Indonesian team but decided to dedicate himself to Belgian football from youth level to the national team.
