A research delegation from the University of Wisconsin, led by Professor Randall B. Dunham, Faculty Director of Executive, Global Learning Experiences, visited and studied in Vietnam.


The purpose of the trip was to learn and research about the leading businesses and business models here. During this visit, the delegation selected and visited Diligo, a business that applies the Humanistic and Karmic ethics of “Kindness from the heart” into its business activities and corporate culture.

Welcoming the research delegation, Diligo CEO Vu Duc Sy shared the story of applying Buddhism to business culture, helping businesses develop and survive.

CEO Vu Duc Sy shared: “When I was young, I dreamed of studying and living in the US because I thought it was paradise. But when I went to study and work with a friend, I found that the US was not like that. My friend ran a supply chain business for a nail salon system with assets of nearly 100 million USD, but his wife had cancer and passed away. The family was extremely unstable and unhappy.

Your wife has breast cancer, so every weekend, you and your husband have to travel from New Jersey to New York to undergo radiation or chemotherapy. Seeing your wife in extreme pain, I also panicked and feared death. I decided to find out, knowing that every year in the US there are about 2.3 million new cases of cancer and the US spends up to 4,000 billion USD on health care.

Americans are tall and strong, but when they are sick, their health deteriorates, they are very weak, and they have fatty livers. I discovered that they only eat fast, fatty industrial foods… Therefore, I decided to return to Vietnam, to be closer to my family because I realized that spiritual life is more important than material life. The American Dream is not a paradise but a habit of “working for money until death”.

Mr. Sy also added that when he was in America, due to his Western lifestyle, he often suffered from mental depression, obesity, fatty blood and liver, sinus, mild hemorrhoids... In particular, his psychology was often unstable, easily angered. He was very miserable when he lived without happiness and was completely unstable in his thoughts, spirit, health, family happiness, children's future, time, relationships, work, money, finances... His happiest childhood was when he went to the temple and lived with his grandmother under the Banyan tree. After that, he returned to study the original Buddhism of Buddha Shakyamuni.

“The Buddha teaches us humanistic ethics and cause and effect. Ethics is to live without causing suffering to oneself, others, or living beings.” The basic lesson of the Buddha is to teach us about the four noble truths of a human life and the eightfold path, which is the method to eliminate all suffering. A human life has four great sufferings: suffering of birth, suffering of old age, suffering of sickness, and suffering of death. The Buddha teaches us to master these four sufferings and eliminate them to end suffering. “Thus, the Buddha Dharma helps us transform our own cause and effect, bringing us from suffering to liberation, from discord to harmony, from cruelty to kindness, from cunning to honesty, from hatred to love, from resentment to forgiveness, from worry, fear to serenity, peace, and safety.” The Buddha's wisdom is Precepts -> Concentration -> Wisdom, which has the ability to completely transform our lives through understanding. Like the truth of a human life, we do not have to pray, make offerings, chant, worship, or wait for the invisible world to bless or bring us blessings. Life belongs to each person, whoever sows will reap the same fruit, good cause will reap good, evil cause will reap evil. When I learned the wisdom, human ethics, and cause and effect of Buddha, I saw that a human life without learning Buddhism is a wasted life, no matter who it is in society," CEO Vu Duc Sy said. Thanks to that, he applied it to himself and after 6 months, the results were very satisfying. His mental and physical illnesses were cured, he became younger and healthier, his family was happy, everything around him was very favorable, his employees, wife, children, and family were happy to see his changes.

He realized that all suffering was created by himself, no one brought it to him, it was like he was tied to a rope and could not find a way to escape. From his own experience, he understood that humans are the source of development and also the result of development to bring to humans. For humans and businesses to develop and survive, they need to apply the "Buddhist ethics of humanism and cause and effect".

CEO Vu Duc Sy confided: “At Diligo, officers and employees learn and apply the 5 Buddhist ethics: 1. Love all living beings and protect life, do not kill, harm life, or harm animals; 2. Greed and renunciation: Do not be greedy, steal, corrupt, or take what is not given; 3. Faithfulness: Do not commit adultery, adultery, or sexual misconduct; 4. Honesty: Do not lie, tell lies, fabricate words, be fickle, or say cruel words like a hammer, like a poisonous snake, or slither like an eel; 5. Clarity, lucidity, sobriety, and calmness: Do not drink alcohol, gamble, engage in social evils, or use stimulants that intoxicate people.

Thanks to that, cadres and workers who were addicted to alcohol, tobacco, cigarettes, swearing, gambling, stealing, littering, swearing, gaming, arguing... are all willing to give up to avoid retribution, suffering and unhappiness. Their families are stable, they are healthy, and can take care of their parents and children's education. Thanks to that, workers are grateful to their leaders and business owners, and to the business owners who practice and apply it to themselves, their families, and their entire company. Workers consider the company as their own family and they consider the company's assets as their own assets. They are not greedy, angry, or ignorant, and never steal money from the company because they consider it as their own assets.

After the sharing of CEO Vu Duc Sy and the actual visit to the Diligo factory, the research team was extremely impressed with the special culture, the first strange phenomenon in the world. The entire Diligo Company is vegetarian, does not drink alcohol, beer, tobacco, cigarettes, does not litter or live in a hurry; from the toilet to the kitchen, everything is neat, clean, does not smell or get dirty... Everyone lives slowly, does not get sick, is in harmony, practices moral living in harmony like water and milk.

Professor Randall B. Dunham, on behalf of the delegation, respectfully paid homage to the Buddha and the Elder and expressed his deep gratitude to Diligo for their thoughtful welcome and valuable sharing during their time studying and researching in Vietnam. He also shared that the delegation realized that the West needs to learn from Eastern culture, especially in the study and application of Buddhism. The professor wanted to research and translate the Diligo Culture article into English to teach and share for American businesses to apply.

The visit not only helped the delegation gain a deeper understanding of the culture of applying humanistic ethics and the "Kindness from the heart" from thoughts, words to actions at Diligo, but was also an opportunity for the delegation to research and learn from Vietnamese businesses and explore potential business cooperation opportunities.

With a unique culture and the business motto of “Kindness from the heart”, the company’s products have been widely distributed throughout the country. With extensive experience in production and export to demanding markets such as the US, Europe, Japan, Korea, etc., the research team chose to visit Diligo during this field trip to Asia.
