Admiring the vibrant beauty of autumn leaves has become popular around the world , but in Asia, viewing the red and yellow leaves has become a tradition in many countries. For example, Japan has a special term for this, called momijigari. The autumn colors in Asia are less promoted but no less spectacular. If you want to explore that beauty, here are seven beautiful places to see autumn leaves across the continent, according to British travel magazine Time Out .
Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
Not far from Tokyo, Ibaraki is a leaf-lover's dream. Bright red kochia bushes paint the hillsides a riot of colour at Hitachinaka's Hitachi Seaside Park. The Mito Ginkgo Festival in November is a great time to experience the golden-carpeted ginkgo avenue of the History Museum. Head to Fukuroda Falls and Eigenji (or Autumn Leaves) in Daigo, or head up to Mt. Tsukuba, where the Momiji Festival takes place when the hills are lit up at night, and you can take in the views by ropeway...
Nami Island, South Korea
The 2002 Korean drama Winter Sonata brought attention to the stunning autumn foliage of Nami Island. The crescent-shaped island is just a short distance from Seoul and can be reached by ferry, speedboat or zipline. On the island, admire the towering conifers of Metasequoia Lane, which form a canopy of orange in autumn, while the bright yellow tunnel of Ginkgo Tree Lane looks spectacular both in real life and on social media.
Alishan Scenic Area, Taiwan
Home to giant red cypress, maple and red pine trees, Alishan is stunning in autumn. Viewing the maple leaves is a popular activity, with the best viewing spots being from the observation decks on Mount Ogasawara, Mount Duigaoyue and Ciyun Temple. The century-old Alishan Forest Railway, which reopened in 2024, is a steam railway that winds around the mountain and offers spectacular views of the forest.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, China
Famous for the mountains that inspired the surreal setting of Avatar , the pillar-like rock outcrops in China’s first national park have become incredibly popular. In autumn, the forest beneath the towering pillars takes on a red-orange hue. Stroll along the Golden Whip Stream, take a boat tour of Baofeng Lake, or head to the scenic spots at Yuanjiajie or Tianzi Mountain to see the maple and ginkgo leaves change color.
Hanoi , Vietnam
It is a lesser-known city for leaf-peeping, but in fact, it is a popular destination for visitors in the fall, with its cool climate and picturesque scenery during the changing seasons. Hanoi's Old Quarter is even more colorful when the temperature drops. Strolling around Hoan Kiem Lake is the best way to admire the red and yellow of autumn. The Mid-Autumn Festival is marked with traditional music , lion dances and lots of mooncakes. At night, the streets are lit up by lanterns of all shapes and sizes, creating a truly enchanting scene.

The Arashiyama Momiji Festival in November features events such as a Heian-era boat parade, traditional tea ceremonies and hiking. Autumn is also a time to enjoy seasonal produce, such as chestnuts (steamed and served with rice), matsutake mushrooms (grilled) and Japanese pumpkin (added to soups).
