We recently had the opportunity to return to the mountainous border commune of Hai Son (Mong Cai City). Everywhere we went, we heard people praising Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Duc Nam, Chief of Po Hen Border Guard Station, for always devoting himself to the people.

According to the story of the people here, Lieutenant Colonel Nam, despite being very busy, always takes time to visit and encourage people in the villages and hamlets to strive to develop the economy ; teach children sponsored by the Station in the programs "Helping children go to school", "Adopted children of the Border Guard Station"...
From the center of Mong Cai city to the center of the commune is more than 30 kilometers of border belt road. Nearly 10 years ago, the road leading to the commune was extremely difficult to travel, because of the divided terrain, steep, winding and zigzag hills. In recent years, the road leading to the commune has been invested in upgrading, repairing, cutting curves, and lowering slopes, but travel is still difficult. Over 86% of the commune is ethnic minority, the lives of many households are still difficult.
At the time we arrived, Lieutenant Colonel Nam was not at the unit because he was busy with the Station's officers going to the base to grasp the local situation, visit, encourage, and check homework for Chieu Thu Huong (born 2010, Than Phun village, Hai Son commune), the Station's "adopted child". We continued to Than Phun village. When meeting us, Lieutenant Colonel Nam shared: Chieu Thu Huong's situation is extremely difficult. Her father has been terminally ill for several years now, her mother does not have a stable job, and she has to support 6 Huong siblings who are school-age. Therefore, many times Huong's studies seemed to have to be abandoned. Lieutenant Colonel Nam discussed and agreed with the Party Committee and the Station's Command to accept Huong as the "adopted child of the Border Guard Station", the unit's third "adopted child", until the children finish 12th grade.
During the sponsorship process, in addition to financial support, the Station regularly sends officers to coordinate with teachers and families to tutor the child in his studies. The care of officers and soldiers of Po Hen Border Station has helped Huong have the opportunity to go to school, be confident in communication, and participate in school activities.
Chieu Thu Huong bragged to us: "At school, we are loved by our teachers, who care for us and teach us many good things. During the summer days at home, my "foster fathers" often visit, encourage me, and guide me in my studies. I promise to try my best to study well so as not to disappoint the love and trust that the border guards have placed in me."

With the viewpoint that "The station is home, the border is the homeland, and the people of all ethnic groups are blood brothers", despite being very busy with professional work, Lieutenant Colonel Nam still arranges reasonable time to go to the grassroots to grasp the situation, thoughts, and lives of the people. On that basis, he and the unit's leaders advise the local Party Committee and government to effectively implement movements, programs, and models to help people develop the socio-economy, ensure security and national defense, etc. Notably, from the beginning of 2024 up to now, the station has supported the people of Po Hen village to build 5 "Model tree gardens"; coordinated with the Party Committee and government to organize dozens of propaganda sessions and disseminate the law to hundreds of cadres and people in the area.
Implementing Directive No. 01/CT-TTg dated January 9, 2015 of the Prime Minister "On organizing the movement of the entire people participating in protecting territorial sovereignty and national border security in the new situation", he advised the locality to maintain the assignment of 28 border party members to be in charge of 132 households in border villages and hamlets; maintain the effective operation of 3 teams/67 households participating in self-management of border markers. From here, the people have provided the unit with a lot of valuable information related to border management and protection activities.
He always pays attention to directing the unit's officers and soldiers to regularly grasp the internal and external border situation to advise superiors on policies and measures to effectively handle incidents and situations on the border, avoiding being passive and surprised; effectively deploying border diplomacy work, advising localities to do well in people's diplomacy, contributing to building a peaceful , friendly, stable, cooperative and developing border.
