At the workshop, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung (Institute of Environment and Resources) informed: on April 25, 2025, there was a serious collision between two ships KMTC Surabaya and Glengyle on Long Tau River (old Can Gio district), spilling about 259.17 tons of FO oil into the environment. After 9 weeks, statistics showed that about 72.6 hectares of mangrove forest were affected by oil spreading and adhering to plants under the influence of light and sea waves.
Many experts say that to protect Can Gio mangrove forest - a world biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO - it is necessary to synchronously deploy many solutions, focusing on propaganda and community education , raising awareness of biodiversity protection, climate change adaptation and mobilizing the participation of people and stakeholders in sustainable resource management and exploitation.
According to Dr. Huynh Duc Hoan, Director of the Management Board of Protective and Special-Use Forests of Ho Chi Minh City, it is necessary to combine biodiversity management and conservation with sustainable economic development, promoting eco-tourism associated with carbon neutrality.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Xuan Hoang emphasized: in the context of increasingly unpredictable climate change, Can Gio mangrove forest not only plays a protective role, protecting the environment but is also a valuable resource serving production, livelihood and tourism. Research, proposal and implementation of scientific and practical solutions will contribute significantly to the protection and sustainable exploitation of the value of the Can Gio mangrove ecosystem.
