Separated from a part of the old Dong Hoi City, Dong Hoi Ward currently has a total natural area of 41.35 ^km2 and a population of 84,196 people. The working headquarters of Dong Hoi Ward is the headquarters of the People's Committee of the old Dong Hoi City. Important provincial administrative agencies located in the ward are: Provincial Party Committee, Provincial People's Committee, Provincial Police, Provincial Military Command, provincial departments, branches, and sectors...

According to Chairman of Dong Hoi Ward People's Committee Hoang Ngoc Dan, the name "Dong Hoi Ward" is to keep the name of the old Dong Hoi City to inherit and develop the city in the future, originating from the central position of the ward in the urban space chain, planned to facilitate the promotion of urban development in a modern direction.

Dong Hoi Ward consists of 8 communes and wards located adjacent to each other, with small natural areas. “In which, 3 wards Dong Hai, Dong Phu and Duc Ninh Dong are where many important offices of the province and central units of the old Dong Hoi City are concentrated, with high population density, being the center of commercial and service activities of the whole province.

There are also many cultural works and historical relics here such as: Ho Chi Minh Square, Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center, Provincial Museum, Suot Mother Monument, Quang Binh Quan, Dong Hoi Citadel... This is also a place that regularly organizes important political events, gathers large crowds, and regularly welcomes delegations of Party and State leaders, domestic and foreign delegations to work with the province.

Bao Ninh and the old Hai Thanh are two localities with high urbanization rates, beautiful beaches, many restaurants, hotels, and resorts , attracting many tourists to visit and relax. The remaining old communes and wards such as Duc Ninh and Nam Ly currently do not have much space for development, most of the land fund has been planned and used, lacking land fund for urban and service development. Therefore, the merger of 8 communes and wards will create favorable conditions, creating space for development into the central urban area of the province, in accordance with the planning and orientation of trade and tourism development of these localities", Chairman of Dong Hoi Ward People's Committee Hoang Ngoc Dan further explained.

Dong Hoi Ward was established on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes and wards (old Dong Hoi City): Bao Ninh, Duc Ninh, Nam Ly, Dong Hai, Dong Phu, Duc Ninh Dong, Phu Hai, Hai Thanh; working place at the headquarters of the People's Committee of the old Dong Hoi City. Dong Thuan Ward was established on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Loc Ninh, Quang Phu and Bac Ly Ward; working place at the headquarters of Bac Ly Ward and Quang Phu Commune. Dong Son Ward was established on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the communes: Nghia Ninh, Thuan Duc and the wards of Bac Nghia, Dong Son; working place at the headquarters of Dong Son Ward, Bac Nghia Ward and Bac Nghia Ward Police.

In terms of area, Dong Hoi ward is now only 1/4 of the old Dong Hoi city, but it has a larger mission and responsibility, becoming the central location of the large province of Quang Tri. The name Dong Hoi will therefore remain its mark forever over time.

The greatest joy of the people is that today, although Dong Hoi is small in scale, it is open, welcoming more citizens to live and work, joining in the joy and historical flow of the homeland", Mr. Luong Kim Chung, a resident of Dong Hoi shared.

“For me, I was assigned to work in Dong Thuan ward in a different role and the administrative unit name is also different from before, but no matter which ward I live and work in, I am always proud because I was originally a citizen of the old Dong Hoi city. I think Dong Son, Dong Hoi or Dong Thuan are all “3 in 1” because the thoughts, feelings, and people always turn to Dong Hoi - a beloved small town - the center of the province...”, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Thuan ward Nguyen Van Coi proudly shared.

Faced with the need to innovate and comprehensively restructure the development space of a first-class urban area in the province, from practice, in recent times, Dong Hoi ward has urgently completed the apparatus to ensure effective and efficient operation; continued to invest, change its appearance appropriately, meet the high requirements in the new period, worthy of being the center of the new Quang Tri provincial capital that is growing.
