Visit Lam Dong blue sea to enjoy giant catfish

The small fish, only about the size of 3 fingers, with a yellow line running along its back, is a specialty of the coastal region of Lam Dong province. Why does this tiny fish “cause nostalgia” for many tourists after trying it once?

Grilled catfish with tamarind sauce and raw vegetables is considered an attractive culinary specialty.

Mr. Nguyen Nam - a tourist in Tay Ninh said: “Last summer, my family and I visited Co Thach Pagoda in Lien Huong Commune and were introduced to coastal restaurants. The first time I enjoyed grilled catfish with tamarind fish sauce and raw vegetables, I was forever impressed by the characteristic sweet and fatty taste of fish just caught by fishermen. Since then, every season I ask a friend to buy a few kilos for me to send in. Catfish is available everywhere, but the taste in Lien Huong seems to be much better. Many people believe that catfish is a wonderful gift that the ocean has bestowed on this sea - one of the few places in the world where the phenomenon of upwelling occurs.”

According to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the phenomenon of upwelling often occurs in the summer, when the southwest monsoon blows strongly, pushing the warm water layer away and replacing it with cold, nutrient-rich water from a depth of hundreds of meters. Thanks to that, the sea here has an abundant source of oxygen and minerals, helping seafood grow quickly, with sweet and fatty meat and high economic value, especially the giant catfish. Local fishermen said that the seafood in this area is sweet, fatty and fragrant, completely different from many other places. In addition to the advantage of upwelling water, the rocky reefs around La Gan cape also contribute to creating a special flavor that is difficult to match anywhere else for the giant catfish.

This fish is caught close to shore.

There are many types of parasitic fish such as: hammer parasitic fish, slimy parasitic fish, round parasitic fish, horizontal parasitic fish, and molar parasitic fish... Among them, the oil parasitic fish is the type with the highest economic value, it is considered a specialty because of its small quantity and not easy to find. Mr. Tran Ngoc Ty - a person who has sold oil parasitic fish in Phu Thuy ward for many years said: This fish is caught close to shore, the largest fish is only the size of a palm, on average 1 kg has 30 - 35 fish. The fish meat is white, chewy, fragrant and sweet, especially the most delicious in this season. Gourmets often buy oil parasitic fish during peak season and freeze them to eat gradually. The simple way to keep it fresh is to put the whole fish in a box, pour seawater over the fish and freeze it, so the flavor remains the same all year round.

The oil-fish (also called "liet chi" in many places) can be processed into many dishes. People in coastal areas only need a pot of fish soup (cooked with eggplant, pineapple, onion, coriander) and fresh oil-fish, hot, served with a plate of delicious chili fish sauce to ensure a good meal, especially in the last months of the year when the weather is a bit chilly. In particular, oil-fish grilled on hot coals is considered the most attractive specialty, making it unforgettable for tourists. Each fish is turned evenly on the grill, the fat melts, making the fish golden brown, giving off a rich aroma. From afar, you can smell the alluring aroma that makes everyone "swallow their saliva". Grilled fish served with tamarind fish sauce and raw vegetables is "unparalleled" delicious. In addition, local people often braise oil-fish, it must be braised very sticky and spicy to be the right taste.

The giant catfish usually appears in large quantities from the 9th lunar month to the Lunar New Year, but this year, it has been available since August. Restaurants and eateries have stocked it up to serve tourists during the holidays; locals also process it into dried giant catfish, which is irresistibly delicious. Currently, the price of the fish ranges from 350,000 to 400,000 VND/kg depending on the size, and by the end of the year it can reach nearly 500,000 VND/kg due to high demand.
