In just 3 days of price reduction, coffee lost all the “achievements” it had made in the past month of consecutive increases. Thus, after only the first three days of the week, domestic coffee prices have decreased by 22,000 – 22,500 VND/kg (equivalent to 17%) compared to the peak of 129,500 – 130,500 VND/kg reached at the end of last week.

According to experts, the sharp drop in coffee prices is believed to be due to the weakening of the Brazilian real, which has prompted speculators to sell off and there has now been a wave of selling in Vietnam right after the first signs of falling prices on the ICE futures exchange.

According to coffee market researcher Nguyen Quang Binh, the price of Arabica coffee has risen to its highest level in 50 years, which has stimulated investors to take profits, putting downward pressure on both exchanges. In addition, the stronger US dollar has also caused Brazilian farmers to increase coffee sales to earn foreign currency, pushing coffee prices down.

In addition, the current increase in the margin required to be allowed to trade on the two coffee exchanges puts traders on the exchanges (whether for speculative purposes or to protect prices) at a disadvantage because they have to pay a large amount of money, limiting their ability to participate. This is also one of the reasons why coffee prices have increased and decreased rapidly in recent times. Moreover, increasing the margin also forces those holding buying and selling positions to reduce the number of trading contracts. When hedge funds on the two exchanges are still carrying too many overbought contracts, increasing the margin forces them to sell some of them to keep a few contracts if they still want to keep their short positions. The exchange with the most overbought contracts is at risk of being sold off more, causing the price to fall even further.

It is predicted that coffee prices will decrease slightly, but will still remain at 100,000 - 110,000 VND/kg. Because the market continues to worry about the coffee supply in major producing countries such as Brazil, Vietnam... due to unfavorable weather.
