Outstanding potential
In his opening speech, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee emphasized that ensuring energy security is the foundation for sustainable development. Resolution 70 of the Politburo has set a target of reaching 183-236 GW of total power capacity in the country by 2030, of which renewable energy accounts for 25-30%, moving towards Net Zero by 2050.
Mr. Pham Anh Tuan - Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, delivered the opening speech at the workshop.
In that picture, Gia Lai stands out with special potential. With an area of over 21,500 km², both a sunny and windy plateau and a 134 km long coastline, the province has the conditions to develop onshore and offshore wind power, solar power, hydropower, biomass and geothermal power. The total potential is estimated at 23,000 MW, enough to make Gia Lai the "green energy capital" of the Central Highlands.
In fact, many projects have been put into operation, making stable contributions to the country: 61 hydropower projects (2,736 MW), 17 wind power projects (916 MW), 7 solar power projects (590 MWp) and 2 biomass power projects (130 MW).
In parallel, the province has launched a renewable energy human resource training and development center, implemented by a joint venture between GEO Group (Germany) and O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd., to create high-quality human resources to serve the industry.
“Gia Lai province hopes that through the workshop, domestic and foreign businesses and experts will share experiences and technologies, contributing to making Gia Lai become the leading clean energy center of Vietnam,” Mr. Pham Anh Tuan affirmed.
Mr. Franz Josef Claes - Chairman of GEO Group, shared at the workshop.
Representing the international partner, Mr. Franz Josef Claes – Chairman of GEO Group, expressed his expectation when working with the partner to build a training and development center for renewable energy human resources in Gia Lai. This will be a center for training, research and technology transfer for Vietnam and the Southeast Asia region.
“By 2030, with more than 6,000 MW of wind power, Vietnam will need at least 1,200 internationally qualified workers. This center was established to meet that need and at the same time become a regional training beacon,” Mr. Claes emphasized.
According to him, GEO brings to Vietnam the entire value chain: advanced wind turbine technology, artificial intelligence monitoring system, to a 20 MW electrolysis project producing green hydrogen and green ammonia for sustainable agriculture .
“This is an important step for Vietnam to contribute to the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050,” affirmed the Chairman of GEO Group.
Ms. Mai Thi Ngoc Thuy - General Director of O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd., spoke.
From the perspective of domestic enterprises, Ms. Mai Thi Ngoc Thuy - General Director of O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd. emphasized that Resolution 70 opens up a "golden opportunity" for the private sector.
Vietnamese businesses need to participate in the entire clean energy value chain, from renewable electricity production, storage, distribution, to green hydrogen, green ammonia, e-methanol and carbon credits. “Only by participating comprehensively can we overcome international trade barriers and improve competitiveness,” Ms. Thuy emphasized.
According to her, green hydrogen is the energy pillar of the 21st century, many countries have entered large-scale commercialization. Vietnam needs to act urgently to not miss the opportunity. She recommended that the State soon issue a legal framework for hydrogen and derivatives, build a transparent carbon market, a human resource strategy based on the ordering model and take advantage of global green capital.
Renewable Energy Center
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Tang The Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) affirmed: "Energy is the backbone of the economy and a pillar of national strategy. Vietnam is entering the most profound energy transition period ever and Gia Lai is a strategic locality".
Mr. Tang The Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy (Ministry of Industry and Trade), spoke.
He emphasized that Resolution 70 and the adjusted Power Plan VIII are the “compasses” that clearly define the path for renewable energy development. Accordingly, by 2030, Gia Lai is expected to reach a total energy capacity of more than 9.6 GW – a figure that affirms its position as the “renewable energy center” of the country.
Projects in Gia Lai have demonstrated clear effectiveness: tens of thousands of new jobs, contributing thousands of billions of VND to the local budget each year, while promoting services, trade and logistics.
“These achievements show that renewable energy not only ensures electricity, but also creates a driving force for comprehensive socio-economic development,” Mr. Hung said, pledging to accompany Gia Lai and businesses, not only at the policy-making level but also in practical implementation.
Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan presented the decision approving the results of the invitation for expressions of interest from investors registering to participate in the project of training and developing human resources for renewable energy to GEO Group and O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd.
“We will create maximum conditions for today's ideas to quickly turn into specific projects, bringing practical benefits to the locality, the country and the international community,” a representative from the Ministry of Industry and Trade affirmed.
According to Mr. Hung, Gia Lai's success will spread throughout the country, becoming a driving force for Vietnam to complete its goals of energy security, green growth and Net Zero 2050. "If we act together, Vietnam will not only ensure sustainable energy but also affirm its new position on the global energy map," he shared.
