Students attending the Hue singing training class

Continuing the Hue singing profession for music teachers

On weekends, dozens of music teachers from many secondary schools in Hue City gathered at Hue College of Culture and Arts to immerse themselves in Hue folk songs. Through the artists and veteran lecturers in spreading Hue folk songs, the teachers participating in the training course were inspired by the art form listed in the intangible cultural heritage. Starting with the theoretical part led by poet Vo Que - Head of the Hue Chamber Music Club, the students were introduced to Hue folk songs in a systematic and comprehensive manner.

Perhaps the most exciting part for many people is practicing with Hue folk songs and melodies. Through experienced artisans in the profession, students take turns practicing Hue folk songs including Ly Tinh tang, Hoai nam, Ngua o, Doan xuan, Tieu khuc, or Ho Mai xap, Gia gao, Ho khoan, and Hue songs such as Luu thuy, Long diep, Lien hoan, Ho quang, Xuan phong... Just like that, in a lesson, each Hue melody or song is clearly written on the board, and the artisans will guide students to sing along to the melody emitted from the sound system. Each section blends with the percussion rhythm to create a fun and interesting lesson.

Attending the training class for the first time, teacher Hoang Van Duy (Vinh Thanh Secondary School) - who has many years of experience teaching music, was still surprised by Hue singing. Although he had heard a lot about Hue singing, when he came into direct contact and was instructed to sing, he was still hesitant. But then, with his existing expertise and dedicated instruction, teacher Duy quickly grasped the basic skills of Hue singing.

“The hardest thing for me when singing Hue songs is how to pronounce the words and breathe. After a few weeks of practice, I have mastered it,” Mr. Duy shared, adding that after a period of practice, he has performed many songs and is most satisfied with the two songs Luu Thuy and Ly Doan Xuan.

Contribute to spreading the quintessence

Like Mr. Duy, many other teachers during the training course practiced individually and in groups. In addition, they also interacted with artisans and artists of the Hue Chamber Music Club at the cultural space 23-25 Le Loi (Thuan Hoa ward), as an experience, gathering experience in the journey of spreading Hue music.

“After completing the training course, when I return, I hope to organize a Hue singing club right in the school to convey what I have learned to the students. In addition, through lessons related to the local education program, I hope to bring Hue melodies and songs to the students, thereby arousing their passion and love for the traditional art of their homeland,” Mr. Duy hopes.

According to the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City, after Hue singing was included in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the city has developed and issued a project to protect and promote the value of Hue singing artistic heritage. The highlight of this project is the program to bring Hue singing heritage into schools, which has been implemented for many years.

Up to now, more than 110 music teachers from secondary schools across the city have participated and been granted certificates. These teachers have then integrated Hue singing into the music curriculum to introduce and teach to students.

Mr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City, said that Hue was the capital of the country for many centuries, a land of poetry, music and painting, a place where the quintessence of national culture converged and spread. Traditional art forms here have been cultivated and created a unique identity, in which Hue folk songs are a bright gem, crystallized from both royal and folk art streams.

According to Mr. Hai, to continue the work of protecting and developing heritage, the Department has built a program to bring Hue singing into schools through training Hue singing for secondary school music teachers and teaching Hue singing to students in the form of Hue singing clubs at some secondary schools. “The program does not stop at teaching singing skills, but also opens up students' ability to perceive, so that they can recognize the depth of humanity in each song, know how to appreciate and love the heritage of their ancestors. Thereby, nurturing a passion for traditional music, helping them boldly practice performing, and at the same time forming awareness and responsibility in protecting and promoting the value of Hue singing,” Mr. Hai shared.

Poet Vo Que - Head of the Chamber Music Club of Hue, one of the people who is passionate about this art form, believes that in order to popularize and teach Hue music in the coming time, the teaching and training program needs to be systematic and systematic with quality textbooks, including both theory and practice. Along with that, it is necessary to find support from the artisans themselves, because the artisans themselves are experienced and highly specialized. Along with that, it is necessary to organize extracurricular activities, apply technology in teaching and learning...
