Actor Ha Jung-Woo returns to audiences through “Hijack 1971” (Vietnamese title: “Siege in the Air”), a film based on a real-life horrific hijacking incident in Korean history.
This film is inspired by a real-life incident in 1971 when a passenger plane departing from Sokcho Airport to Gimpo Airport was hijacked in the skies over Hongcheon Province.
On board the flight from Sokcho to Gimpo were co-pilot Tae-in (Ha Jung-woo), captain Gyu-sik (Sung Dong-il) and flight attendant Ok-soon (Chae Soo-bin). However, shortly after takeoff, a homemade bomb exploded, causing chaos in the cabin. Yong-dae (Yeo Jin-goo) attempted to hijack the plane, took control of the cockpit and requested a diversion.
The film brings together many talented Korean actors such as Ha Jung-woo, Yeo Jin-goo, Sung Dong-il and Chae Soo-bin. Ha Jung-woo is famous for his special ability to transform into characters of many different genres. In the film, he plays the role of co-pilot Tae-in, who is responsible for the fate of the passenger plane.
A former Air Force fighter pilot, Tae-in is known for his excellent flying skills and sense of responsibility. Amidst a dangerous hijacking, he leads the effort to find a way to help people overcome the crisis. The actor expressed: "I found this character interesting, because of his story and past trauma, he faced danger."
The robber Yong-dae, played by Yeo Jin-goo, shows a new transformation. Yeo Jin-goo shared, “I prepared by considering and considering many different aspects to create a new character and worked closely with director Kim Sung-han throughout the filming process to build the story of Yong-dae, ensuring that he was portrayed as a villain with depth.”
Veteran Captain Gyu-sik is played by Sung Dong-il, an actor known for his profound acting skills. Gyu-sik is a seasoned professional who always prioritizes the safety of passengers in every situation and stays in the cockpit until the last minute. Sung Dong-il brings a realistic character through his calm and powerful acting, even in the face of the most desperate crises. The reunion of Ha Jung-woo and Sung Dong-il after their roles as co-pilot and captain in “A Perfect Landing” (2009) is highly anticipated.
In addition, Chae Soo-bin, known for her unique and emotional performances in works such as “The Last Royal Treasure” (2022) and “Sweet and Sour” (2021), plays flight attendant Ok-soon. Closest to the hijacker, Ok-soon is a resolute and responsible character who carries out her duties even in times of crisis.
The combination of a talented cast and an engaging, dramatic story promises to bring a captivating and breathtaking experience throughout the 100 minutes of “Siege in the Air”. The film is scheduled to premiere on July 19 in theaters nationwide.
