Hanoi: Office workers braved the rain all morning, arriving at work just in time for... lunch.

Cancel work schedule after several hours of rain

When she woke up this morning, Ms. Tran Phuong Anh (in Linh Dam, Hanoi ) was fed up when she saw the pouring rain. Whenever it rains, Hanoi gets congested, so she and her husband reminded each other to move quickly to avoid being "stuck" on the road.

With a growling stomach, Ms. Phuong Anh hurriedly cleaned up, changed clothes and rushed out of the house, heading to her makeup shop on Hoang Ngoc Phach street.

Before that, she and her husband booked a taxi to go to work but waited 15 minutes without a driver accepting the trip. In order to meet the customer on time at 9am, she had to switch to a motorbike.

Amidst the pouring rain, splashing in her face, the motorbike wobbled on the road. After only a few minutes, she encountered a long traffic jam on Nguyen Xien Street, near Thang Long University.

"Lines of motorbikes and cars lined up on the road. Almost all of them stood still, taking on the rain and wind during rush hour. It's been a long time since we've had such heavy rain and traffic jams, leaving everyone helpless," said Ms. Phuong Anh.

Flooded roads, many vehicles stalled in the middle of the road, making the traffic jam even more serious, the line of cars getting longer and longer.

Phuong Anh and her husband patiently moved their motorbike little by little. The rain was pouring down, they were soaked and shivering with cold. It was truly a "torture" day at work for the workers.

After an hour, she was still "drifting" on the road, so she had to call the customer to cancel the appointment.

"Today, I had an appointment with a young customer at the makeup shop on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival at school. Because of the rain and heavy traffic, I had to call the child's mother to cancel the appointment. With this situation, I might not be able to go to the shop until evening," said Ms. Phuong Anh.

Seeing that the road was clearer, the couple decided to carry the motorbike across the median strip to cross the street. She didn’t get home until 11:20.

"I also have many appointments with customers in the afternoon. I will discuss with them based on the weather conditions. The rain and wind, and the difficult roads to work greatly affect the workers' work," Ms. Phuong Anh lamented.

12 o'clock on time to go to work... for lunch

Seeing the heavy rain that never stopped, instead of leaving home at around 7am like usual, Ms. D.P. (in Nam Tu Liem district, Hanoi) accepted to go to work late to avoid traffic jams. She started arriving at the office at 9:30am, thinking that the roads were clear, the sidewalks were airy, and she could quickly get to work.

Unexpectedly, when she reached Me Tri Street, Ms. P. felt discouraged when she saw the traffic that seemed to have stopped for a long time. This was only 2km from her office.

She tried to wait patiently, lining up to move. However, when the clock struck 10:30, she had only moved a few hundred meters.

"The rain flooded the roads, many vehicles stalled, making the traffic jam even worse. I had to call my boss to report that I might not be able to get to work until noon," Ms. P. said sadly.

After waiting for too long, she decided to turn around and find another road that was not congested. She searched on Google Map, many roads were still red even though it was 10:30. After observing for a while, she finally figured out a more open road.

Ms. P. said: "I have to turn around to get to Thang Long Avenue. Then I go to the underpass, cross the street to get to the highway, and go to Tran Duy Hung underpass. This seems to be a more open route."

So she left home at 9:30, and around 11:00 she continued to move past the house to find a non-congested route to work.

"At that time it was still raining heavily, on the road I passed there were many people on motorbikes having to take shelter from the rain and many cars had stalled," Ms. P. added.

Since the beginning of the year, this is the first time Ms. P. has encountered such heavy rain and traffic jams.

"Traffic jams are normal in the capital. But it's been a long time since I've seen such a long traffic jam, to the point where I only get to work at 12 noon, just in time for lunch, when the distance is only 7km," Ms. P. sighed.
