Two Evergreen ships crashed, a series of containers fell into the sea

(Dan Tri) - Two Evergreen container ships have had consecutive accidents, causing dozens of containers to fall into the sea. Although there were no casualties, the accidents have raised concerns about maritime safety and environmental risks.

A serious incident occurred with the Ever Lunar container ship of Evergreen Marine Corp. About 50 containers fell into the sea off the port of Callao (Peru), forcing the port to temporarily close and disrupt operations.

According to information from Evergreen Shipping Company, at around 9:40 a.m. on August 1, while the ship was anchored waiting to dock, a sudden vibration caused the ship to shake violently. Experts said the cause could have been a tsunami caused by an earthquake in Russia, rough sea conditions, or unusually large waves. The incident caused dozens of containers at the stern of the ship to fall into the sea.

According to Amilcar Velasquez, the head of the Callao port, the Ever Lunar was carrying about 7,000 containers at the time of the incident. He also said that the containers that fell into the sea contained plastic products and no hazardous substances. This helps to eliminate the possibility of marine pollution.

The entire crew is safe and no one was injured in the incident. Local authorities are working with Evergreen to investigate the specific cause and implement measures to ensure maritime safety and limit the impact on the marine environment.

Previously, Evergreen had a serious incident with the Ever Feat container ship operated by Evergreen Shipping (Taiwan), when the ship capsized and a series of containers were pushed due to severe weather off the coast of Brazil. The incident caused about 30-40 containers to be severely damaged, some of which fell into the sea or hung dangerously on the ship.

According to Uruguayan maritime authorities, the incident took place late on July 28 when the Ever Feat was en route from the port of Navegantes (Brazil) to Montevideo (Uruguay). Strong winds and large waves in the Rio Grande do Sul state area caused the ship to shake violently, collapsing at least two rows of containers.

Images from the scene showed several containers crushed or hanging from the port side of the ship.

When the ship docked in Montevideo on July 29, local authorities established a no-go zone around the ship to conduct salvage operations and remove dangerous cargo. Some containers were confirmed to contain fertilizer, raising concerns about chemical leaks and impacts on the marine environment. However, there was no indication that any of the containers contained toxic substances.

Evergreen is working with maritime authorities, classification societies and salvage teams to assess the damage and determine the cause. Experts say the ship’s violent roll in severe weather conditions may have exceeded the design limits for cargo stability.

Experts say this incident is the latest blow to Evergreen, as the company continues to struggle to resolve the lingering legal consequences of the Ever Given ship getting stuck and blocking the Suez Canal in 2021.
