426 doctors who passed the 50th residency exam (2025 - 2028) participated in Match Day - the day to choose residency training majors, organized by Hanoi Medical University (HMU). The event took place on the afternoon of September 9.
Students are selected for their residency major right at the hall of Hanoi Medical University.
In 2025, the School received 1,009 applications from students from 14 health training institutions nationwide, for 38 training majors. Candidates were ranked according to their scores after the exam, with priority given to their favorite majors.
The valedictorian of the 50th residency exam was Dr. Vu Ngoc Duy, with a score of 25.09/30. Previously, Duy also graduated from the medical school of Hanoi Medical University, with a total score of 8.11/10.
Surpassing more than 1,000 candidates to become the valedictorian of the 50th residency exam, Dr. Duy shared his joy and surprise. "At first, I only set a goal of being in the top 20. This result was probably partly lucky because the other candidates were all very good," Duy shared.
Duy said his decision to pursue medicine came from the influence of his mother, who is also a doctor. Since he was young, he understood the life and work of a doctor more than other professions, so he chose to study medicine.

When asked about the secret to passing the "toughest" exam for medical students, Duy humbly said: "There is no special secret, just try hard every day, study carefully from the beginning, be diligent in clinical practice and thoroughly understand the problem by asking teachers and looking up information."
Regarding Match Day, Duy admitted that he was nervous when choosing a major in 30 seconds. With the first priority, he decided to choose Obstetrics and Gynecology, based on his passion and inspiration from Mr. Tran Danh Cuong (senior lecturer, former Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Hanoi Medical University - PV), who told many career stories and motivated him.
Meanwhile, the valedictorian of Hanoi Medical University in 2025, Ngo Thu Ha, just passed the residency program, ranked 14th, and chose the Oncology major.

In 2019, Thu Ha was the national valedictorian of block B00 and chose Hanoi Medical University to study. Six years later, Ngo Thu Ha graduated with honors in medical school with an impressive score of 8.42/10 and became the "super rare" double valedictorian of the school in many years.
This month, Ngo Thu Ha will be the only student of Hanoi Medical University to be honored as the valedictorian of Hanoi in 2025 at the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam.
According to Professor Nguyen Huu Tu, Principal of Hanoi Medical University, in 2025, after 51 years of training resident physicians, the school will continue to organize the Match Day event for students admitted to the 50th resident physician course to choose their major and enroll in early October 2025. This is a unique enrollment activity, currently only available at the school.
The department teachers congratulated the new resident doctors of the training major.
Doctors choose residency training after passing the rigorous entrance exam of Hanoi Medical University
"Candidates are ranked by score to prioritize their favorite major. Once they choose medicine, any major is worthy of research and dedication. The important thing is to be determined to study, practice and build capacity to become a good expert" - the school representative advised.
Over the past 10 years (2016 - 2025), this major selection day has been an anticipated event, taking place in an atmosphere of suspense and excitement as the quotas are gradually filled, bringing interesting surprises to candidates and teachers.
To participate in the residency training, doctors who have graduated from medicine, traditional medicine, and dentistry can take the residency exam immediately after graduation. Successful candidates will become residents, training full-time for 3 years at the school and practice facility.
Since 1974, Hanoi Medical University has been assigned by the Ministry of Health to train resident physicians, aiming to provide good doctors and at the same time train high-quality lecturers. Over the past 50 years, the school has trained more than 5,000 resident physicians, many of whom have become leaders and leading experts of the Ministry of Health, central and provincial hospitals, contributing to raising the level of Vietnamese medicine on the international map.
