Airlines check passengers' weight before boarding

Air New Zealand will check the weight of passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport, a requirement of the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.

The passenger weight survey was conducted from May 31 to July 2 to collect data on the load from cargo, in-flight meals, to luggage in the luggage compartment, passenger weight, crew and carry-on luggage so that the airline can come up with the most reasonable load plan.

Travelers will be asked to stand on a digital scale when they check in. The weight information will then be sent to the survey but will not be displayed on the check-in staff's screen. They will also place their luggage on a separate scale for a separate weighing.

According to Forbes , the information will be used to calculate the average passenger weight because it is very useful for pilots when calculating the weight and balance of the plane. An official of the airline said that the participants will help the airline fly safely.

However, weight is private information that not everyone wants to reveal. To protect individual privacy, the airline has anonymized the data.

Alastair James, Air New Zealand’s load control innovation specialist, assured passengers that their weight would be recorded discreetly on a computer screen and not displayed to anyone else. “We know it can be difficult to get on the scales. We want to reassure our customers that there are no visible screens anywhere. No one can see your weight, not even us,” James said.

Air New Zealand said it needed at least 10,000 passengers to participate in the survey.

In fact, this isn’t the first time Air New Zealand has asked passengers to step on the scale before boarding a plane. Domestic passengers took part in a survey in 2021, but the international travel survey was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
