Thousands of private cars poured into the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City to get on the highway, causing heavy congestion. At the western gateway, the same thing happened, with long lines of vehicles lining the road.
On January 24 (December 25), the number of people returning home to celebrate Tet by personal vehicles skyrocketed, causing serious congestion at the eastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Giao thong Newspaper reporters at An Phu intersection, thousands of vehicles lined up, waiting to enter the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway. Most of the vehicles were cars going to the Eastern provinces such as: Vung Tau, Ninh Thuan , Binh Thuan...
At many times, vehicles lined up in 7 rows on the road, inching forward. Not only was An Phu intersection jammed with traffic, but neighboring roads such as Mai Chi Tho, Luong Dinh Cua, Dong Van Cong... were also in a similar situation.
Currently, An Phu intersection is under construction, most of the road surface is blocked so traffic is more difficult. Besides, this is a vital route, connecting industrial parks and ports so the amount of traffic passing through is very large.

"I learned from experience many years ago not to travel during rush hour to avoid traffic jams, but it seems like everyone learned the same lesson as me, so cars line up on the road, moving little by little. Now the national highway is also congested, and the expressway is also congested," said Nguyen Van Quang (living in District 10) on his way back to his hometown in Khanh Hoa .
In addition to cars, today, the number of people going home by motorbike at the eastern gateway has also increased sharply. Vehicles jostle and weave between large vehicles to get going. In the rather unpleasant weather of Ho Chi Minh City, people are waiting wearily for the road to clear so they can move forward.
To limit congestion, the HCM City Department of Transport recommends that people on some routes from HCM City to the Southeast and Central Highlands provinces and vice versa, limit vehicles from gathering at the An Phu intersection as well as neighboring routes. In particular, the route from HCM City to the Southeast and Central Highlands provinces includes: Route 1: (all vehicles), Eastern Bus Station - National Highway 13 - National Highway 14 (or DT 741).
Route 2: National Highway 13 - Pham Van Dong - National Highway 1, Thu Duc City (Le Kha Phieu Street) - National Highway 1 - Dong Nai Bridge - Vung Tau Intersection Overpass - National Highway 1 (Dau Giay Intersection) - National Highway 20; or New Eastern Bus Station - National Highway 1 - Dong Nai Bridge - Vung Tau Intersection Overpass - National Highway 1 (Dau Giay Intersection) - National Highway 20.
Route 3: (car): National Highway 13 - Pham Van Dong - Dinh Bo Linh - Bach Dang - Xo Viet Nghe Tinh - Dien Bien Phu - Saigon Bridge - Vo Nguyen Giap - Mai Chi Tho - expressway access road - Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway - National Highway 1 (Dau Giay intersection) - National Highway 20.
At the western gateway, on December 25th, traffic congestion was also quite heavy when the number of vehicles returning to their hometowns was high. This afternoon, 51 traffic police units in Ho Chi Minh City will be deployed to ensure traffic order and safety, creating the best conditions for people returning to their hometowns to celebrate Tet. On the main roads of the city, traffic police patrolled continuously, promptly detecting and handling incidents on the road.
At complex intersections, traffic police and other forces will be present regularly to regulate and direct traffic. It is forecasted that from 6pm to 10pm and 5am to 11am tomorrow, main roads and highway access roads will be very crowded, with the possibility of local traffic congestion. Traffic police remind people to check information and news before traveling to choose the appropriate route.
On January 24, 25, 26 (ie December 25, 26, 27) - the Traffic Police Department will also distribute 13,200 bottles of mineral water, 3,000 cold towels, 400 helmets, red envelopes promoting traffic safety and some food (bread or dumplings) to support and encourage people to return home for Tet.
