Rare: Man has 3 types of cancer at the same time

(Dan Tri) - A 72-year-old male patient returned for a check-up because of pain in the area where he had oral cancer, but the test results surprised the entire treatment team: he also had two other types of cancer.

The 72-year-old male patient had a history of oral cancer and underwent surgery in 2017.

In April, the patient developed pain at the site of the previous cancer. When he went to the doctor, he was diagnosed with a recurrence of oral cancer.

Directly examining the patient, BSCKI Ninh Cong Vi - Oncology specialist, said that when diagnosing the recurrence of stage K, he unexpectedly discovered that the patient also had esophageal cancer and colon cancer (3 different types of pathological anatomy).

"Detecting 3 different cancers (not metastatic) at the same time in one patient is very rare," Dr. Vi shared.

The patient immediately underwent laparoscopic ESD resection of the colon tumor. Next, the patient underwent a parallel treatment phase of 2 locations, chemotherapy once a week, and radiation to both the palate and esophagus, with the aim of inhibiting the growth of both cancers and then targeting each type of cancer.

"Because the treatment process is continuous, large-area, and long-term on an elderly patient, we have prescribed nutritional support, along with metabolic support, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving drugs, blood transfusions, and immune-boosting drugs to ensure the patient can follow the treatment process best," Dr. Vi informed.

The patient is currently doing well and recovering well. He will be re-evaluated in 1 month for all treated areas.

According to experts, with cancer, the earlier it is detected, the higher the chance of cure. There are patients with breast cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, thyroid cancer... detected in the early stages, cured, lived healthy for decades, still married, had children normally.
