The first important tool to conquer the employer is the job application. If you do not know how to invest in a professional job application to catch the employer's eye, it will be difficult for you to get the job you want.

What important things should a job application contain?

Your resume should accurately reflect your personal values. In other words, it should be a mirror of who you are.

In addition to the usual documents required such as CV, personal history, transcripts, relevant degrees, recommendation letters, health certificates, copies of ID cards, household registration books..., you also have to clarify these things in your profile: What makes you unique, what makes you different and why should the company hire you? That is, you have to show the employer that hiring you is a profitable investment for their company.

You should not simply list the jobs you have done and are doing, show the value of your contribution through each job, with specific evidence. Do not write generally like: "I have experience managing many projects..." but: "In 2023, I successfully managed 10 projects with a total budget of 500 billion VND and a project team of about 20 people...".

What will employers evaluate?

1. Specialized knowledge and general knowledge

Professional knowledge as shown through qualifications is the first document that is considered. I always look at the candidate's transcript, especially the specialized subjects. I will reject the candidate if the specialized subjects' scores are not high, because it shows that the candidate is not responsible for the career he/she has chosen.

In addition, foreign language ability is an important factor. I often joke with students, you can be bad at some subjects, but you must be good at foreign languages.

Nowadays, if you are not good at foreign languages, you limit your learning opportunities and your ability to work. Statistics show that people who are good at foreign languages can earn 30% more than people who are bad at foreign languages.

At some companies, due to job requirements, they also evaluate candidates' understanding of social issues.

2. Skills needed to do well in the recruitment job

The skills needed for a job are not only demonstrated by the certificates of graduation from this course or that course. The question is whether you can use those skills proficiently.

Therefore, in addition to the certificate that you have completed a public speaking training course, I hope to see evidence that you have worked as an MC, coordinator… in class, school, club events…

At the same time, you need to clearly identify the skills required for the job you are applying for in order to learn and improve. Skills are assets that will follow you throughout your life, so you should consciously practice to become more proficient every day.

3. Attitude and working style

Attitude, style, and work ethic are the most important factors when evaluating a candidate. When meeting and interviewing in person, it is easy to evaluate style and demeanor. But how can attitude be expressed on paper - in a job application?

When you say you are a positive, sociable, eager to learn and willing to help others, you should provide evidence. That is why I encourage young people to actively participate in activities and movements of the Youth Union and Association right from when they are still in school. Because when you participate in those activities, you have the opportunity to improve your knowledge, experience skills and learn many good things.

Most importantly, a collective working environment will help you reduce your ego, to focus on others, to know how to contribute and sacrifice for the collective, to practice responsibility, to learn and practice organizational skills, team leadership...

All are necessary for any future work.

And when it comes to attitude, I want to emphasize AQ - overcoming difficulties. Work is not always easy or favorable. You always have to make an effort, be diligent, be patient... to overcome obstacles in study and life. Show the employer your AQ - overcoming difficulties.

4. Experience

The question I get most often when talking to students is: Where do you get experience when you just graduated?

First, it must be stated that when the candidate is a recent graduate, experience is not a mandatory condition. In my leadership career, I have recruited hundreds of recent graduates, even during their internships.

Most students have part-time jobs. In my opinion, you should choose part-time jobs that are related to your future career. For example, if you study accounting, you can choose to work as a cashier at a coffee shop; if you study marketing, you can work as a content writer for advertisements… In this way, part-time jobs also help you understand more about your future job. And instead of just listing part-time jobs, get confirmation and evaluation from the company or department leaders about your work spirit and results.

5. Personal relationships

In addition to personal information, employers are also interested in the social relationships that candidates have established, referrals, and people they need to contact to better understand the candidate, all of which are important information.

As a student, you can build relationships with lecturers, experts in the field you are studying, seniors and specialized forums...

However, I want to emphasize the relationship with university friends. This is the most valuable and lasting relationship. University friends are really close friends, willing to help and support each other.

6. Appearance and health

Choose a photo that is appropriate for the job you are applying for to show in your application. If you play sports , jog, etc., please attach your achievements and evidence of these activities. Being active in your health is a plus and businesses today strongly encourage their employees to play sports.

Finally, virtual but real - your image in the virtual world - on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok accounts... is very important and must be compatible with the real person you want to show. Companies today, when recruiting important positions, carefully consider the information on the candidate's social networks. So when is it necessary to prepare a job application?

Most students will do this in their final year of college. Too late. Because there is a lot of evidence of your ability and capability shown in your first year, second year…

So, I think, as soon as you enter college, get ready for the job application process.
