Soc Trang students make devices to find people trapped in fires

The project won second prize (no first prize) in the provincial Science and Technology competition for high school students in the 2023-2024 school year.

Locate the trapped person

In case of fire, this device sends out a signal so that rescuers can locate trapped people and rescue them promptly.

Lam Hung Vi said: "The system to warn and detect people trapped in apartment fires designed by the team includes a management unit and a sensor unit. Accordingly, the management unit is located at the apartment management office.

The sensors will be mounted on the ceiling or wall of each apartment. These two parts are linked together by the Internet (WiFi).

To optimize for users, Tran and Vi also designed an application website so that users can access it using smartphones and computers with Internet connection. The website operates and emits warning signals similar to the management unit located in the apartment building's management office.

This is convenient no matter where you go, you can still monitor the actual situation in the apartment, especially the actual temperature.

According to the implementation team, when a fire breaks out in an apartment building, the device will identify which apartment in the building has an unusually high temperature and transmit a sensor signal.

The signal will display warnings on the management board, notify navigation to people and managers, especially helping fire prevention and rescue forces to clearly understand the situation, propose rescue plans as well as priority rescue areas.

In addition to determining where the fire is, the device also simultaneously detects the location of survivors or trapped victims within each room through human recognition sensors, high temperature sensors and emergency buttons within each apartment.

Emergency speaker system

Lam Bao Tran added that the device also has a speaker system so rescuers can encourage and guide victims through the initial steps to escape danger while waiting for rescuers to arrive.

On the contrary, victims can also call for help. The system uses WiFi to connect and transmit data. But to prevent power outages in case of fire, the students also created a device that uses a backup power source to provide WiFi to ensure the system operates stably. The "Warning and detection system for people trapped in apartment fires" costs only about 2 million VND per set of equipment.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, the project's supervisor and vice principal of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted, said that when the school learned that Tran and Vi had the idea to carry out this project, it supported and assisted them step by step from the design stage, finding materials, and implementation costs.

"We always encourage students to do scientific research while still in high school. This helps them get acquainted and know how to conduct a scientific research project, which will be an advantage when they go to university.

Besides, students will learn necessary soft skills such as teamwork, presentation and debate skills which will be useful for them when they continue studying or go to work," said Mr. Phong.

Establish a scientific research team

From the fact that many students are passionate about scientific research, the board of directors of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted has established a scientific research team for nearly 8 years.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong is the instructor and orientator of research topics for students. Currently, the research team has nearly 50 members regardless of class as long as they have a passion for scientific research.

Each member will have the responsibility to support you within their ability to complete the research topic together. From there, help members exchange, learn and gain experience from each other.
