Launching the campaign to "revive" the seaport

On June 3, news from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Binh Dinh province said that, regarding the information reported by SGGP Newspaper on "Garbage overflowing estuaries and fishing ports in Binh Dinh", published on May 17, 2023, implementing the direction of the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province, the People's Committee of Cat Khanh commune has simultaneously mobilized to clean up the De Gi estuary area.

According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu, Vice Chairman of Cat Khanh Commune People's Committee, in recent days, the locality has mobilized 1 excavator, 1 small truck along with about 100 people to collect garbage, waste, and handle "black spots" of garbage gathering that SGGP Newspaper reported from De Gi fishing port, the area near Cat Khanh Border Guard Station extending to the breakwater of An Quang Dong and An Quang Tay villages (Cat Khanh commune)...

In addition, Cat Khanh commune has also contracted with a local waste collection company to increase the frequency of garbage collection to 4 times/week. The commune has also drafted a budget to contract dredging and leveling to clean up large garbage collection points along the estuary, the area of squid processing facilities in 2 villages An Quang Dong, An Quang Tay...

Efforts to clean up De Gi estuary

Authorities placed trash bins along the De Gi estuary.

There are still many difficulties.

Sharing the story of waste at De Gi estuary, Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu pointed out the difficulties, the amount of domestic waste drifting on the estuary, water surface and De Gi lagoon is very large and the source of waste comes from many places. Therefore, the Vice Chairman of Cat Khanh Commune People's Committee said that it is necessary to have the cooperation of all localities along the lagoon and estuary to fundamentally solve the problem of marine waste.

People, officials and militia in Cat Khanh commune joined forces to clean up De Gi estuary.

In addition, according to Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu, the commune's limited resources do not have enough funds to collect waste on the water surface as well as to communicate, mobilize, purchase equipment and products to treat and collect waste, so it is very difficult.

“Recently, the press has reported that this is a common situation in the entire De Gi estuary, not just Cat Khanh commune. Therefore, if only Cat Khanh commune takes action, it will be very difficult to completely resolve the general waste problem. Therefore, we really hope that the province and district will pay attention to allocating funding so that the locality has a fund to collect waste at the estuary, because at present, everyone is working on a voluntary basis and the commune does not have any funding,” said Mr. Nguyen Trung Hieu.

On the same day, speaking to SGGP reporters, a representative of the Department of Environmental Protection (Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Binh Dinh province) said that they have not yet received a report on the results of waste treatment at seaports from the People's Committee of Quy Nhon City. "We will compile the results of the information processing reported by the localities to soon report to the Provincial People's Committee. Thereby, we will also have general information to respond to the press," the representative added.

It is known that at the estuary, the channel area leading to the Quy Nhon fishing boat anchorage port is a huge "black spot" of garbage that has existed persistently for a long time...

Garbage at Quy Nhon port estuary, previously recorded by SGGP Newspaper

Binh Dinh province directed very early

Previously, SGGP reporters received feedback from a number of residents at De Gi estuary (Phu Cat district, Binh Dinh province), then expanded to record the reality of the widespread problem of marine waste at De Gi estuaries, fishing ports and Quy Nhon City.

In the article "Garbage overflows the estuary and fishing port in Binh Dinh" and the clip posted on May 17 on SGGP Online Newspaper, we pointed out a number of locations where huge amounts of marine waste exist in the estuary area adjacent to the De Gi breakwater, the section passing through An Quang Dong and An Quang Tay villages (Cat Khanh commune, Phu Cat district) extending to De Gi fishing port and the estuary area from Quy Nhon fishing port deep into the fishing boat anchorage channel in Hai Cang ward (Quy Nhon city)...

On May 17, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Thanh, Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee, issued a document conveying the opinion of Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan, assigning the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the province to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Quy Nhon City People's Committee, Phu Cat District People's Committee and inspection units to urgently handle the waste pollution situation at the province's estuaries and fishing ports.

Thereby, promptly respond to SGGP Newspaper and report the results to the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee and provincial departments and branches for understanding and monitoring...
