More than 8.5 million accounts stolen, Vietnam cybersecurity warning

(Dan Tri) - The State Audit organized a cyber security drill, affirming that protecting financial data and public assets is the number one task, in the context of more than 8.5 million accounts being stolen in the first half of the year.

On the afternoon of September 23, the Department of Information Technology (State Audit) coordinated with Viettel Cyber ​​Security Company and NGS Communications Equipment Joint Stock Company to organize a conference on practical exercises on information security on information technology systems.

At the Conference, Deputy State Auditor General Bui Quoc Dung emphasized that the State Audit's information technology system is an important national data infrastructure, not only serving auditing activities but also storing a large amount of data on the budget, finance and public assets.

The State Audit has built a 3-layer defense system, but there is still a risk of losing security when attacked. "The information security system can ensure up to 95% security, but there is still a risk of losing security due to users' awareness of unsafe access, revealing passwords...", Mr. Dung said.

Mr. Bui Quoc Dung emphasized that in the coming time, the State Audit needs to give top priority to investing in ensuring the safety and security of information systems, upgrading information security systems, while strengthening access control solutions and organizing training to raise security awareness for the entire industry.

More than 8.5 million accounts were stolen in the first half of the year

Mr. Pham Huy Thong, Deputy Director in charge of the Department of Information Technology, said that in the context of strong digital transformation, the risk of network insecurity and insecurity is constantly increasing in both scale and sophistication.

“In the first half of 2025, Vietnam recorded more than 8.5 million stolen accounts, nearly 530,000 DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks and 191 data leaks with more than 3 billion records affected - 3 times higher than the same period in 2024. Ransomware attacks also caused tens of millions of USD in damage, with terabytes of data encrypted,” he informed.

According to Mr. Pham Huy Thong, Vietnam is among the top 10 countries most attacked by cyberattacks in the world. Many important systems in the fields of finance, banking, telecommunications and even state agencies have become targets, directly affecting economic security and social life.

“A typical example is the hacker attack on the National Credit Information Center CIC under the State Bank, which showed signs of personal data appropriation. It has been confirmed by VNCERT under the Department of Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention (A05, Ministry of Public Security ) and is being investigated,” Mr. Thong said.

According to this person, the above figures and events are not only a warning bell but also a reminder that ensuring information security has become an urgent task, directly linked to the stability and development of each agency and organization.

“The State Audit always identifies the safety and security of the information system as a particularly important task, directly linked to the quality and reputation of the Industry. The State Audit's information system is not only a tool for auditing activities but also stores a large amount of important data related to budget management, public finance and public assets,” he emphasized at the Conference.
