Specifically, all new students must complete the Cyber Security course and pass the Anti-Fraud Challenge designed by the Hong Kong Police before September 21.
Under the rules, students who fail will have their access to important university learning resources restricted. This includes being banned from the library, not being able to borrow electronic devices, and not being able to book study rooms. This policy is considered a strong deterrent, forcing students to equip themselves with the skills to recognize and prevent cheating behaviors.
Notably, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is not the first school to adopt this initiative. Previously, the University of Hong Kong also implemented a similar educational model.
The move by top universities reflects growing public concern over high-tech scams targeting young people and students. Experts say the collaboration between education and police will not only raise awareness but also create a safer learning environment.
HKUST's new policy is expected to serve as a reference model for many other universities in the region.
