Ia Grai "supports" poor students who love to study

(GLO)- During 6 years of coordinating the implementation of the "Foster Children" Project, Ia Grai District Youth Union and the Volunteer Association for the Community ( Ho Chi Minh City) have supported 15 students with difficult circumstances to go to school. The project spreads good values, connecting kind hearts for the community.

Following Mr. Nong Hong Phong - Secretary of Ia Grai District Youth Union, we visited the family of Dang My Duyen (class 11A4, Huynh Thuc Khang High School) in village 1, Ia Kha town. Talking with Duyen, we felt even more sorry for her. After the divorce, her mother brought Duyen and her three sisters to live with their grandmother who was over 70 years old and then went to work as a factory worker in Ho Chi Minh City, only returning home once a year. Last year, Duyen's older sister passed the entrance exam to the University of Foreign Languages (University of Da Nang ) but because she did not have enough money to cover her tuition, she applied to work at a textile company in Ho Chi Minh City.

So, Duyen has to shoulder all the housework, take care of her grandmother and her younger brother who is in 7th grade. Duyen grows clean vegetables in the garden to sell to earn extra money to cover her living expenses. Despite the difficulties, she is very studious and always achieves high results. Last semester, her average score was 8.3. She also won third prize in Geography in the provincial high school competition.

In her conversation with us, Duyen expressed her gratitude for receiving 200,000 VND per month from the “Foster Child” Project for the past 6 years of school. At the beginning of the school year, Duyen also received support for uniforms, textbooks and school supplies. Every summer, she and her friends participate in summer camps to improve life skills through team building activities, charity work and visits to businesses and traditional craft villages.

“I am very lucky to receive a scholarship from the project. Many activities have helped us gain useful life skills as well as motivation to study well,” Duyen confided.

Mrs. Tran Thi Minh - Duyen's grandmother was moved to say: "Because the family is poor, the children are exempted from tuition fees, and the units support Duyen every month to buy more books and school supplies. This good deed not only has material significance but also encourages Duyen to strive to excel in her studies."

Over the past 6 years, Doan Thi Nhi Thao (class 12A1, A Sanh High School) has also received a scholarship from the "Foster Child" Project. Due to family difficulties and limited land for production, Thao's parents had to work for hire to have enough money to support 4 siblings to study. Understanding her parents' difficulties, Thao always strives to study for a brighter future. In the first semester, Thao achieved an average score of 9.0; won an encouragement prize in Physics in the provincial high school graduation exam. Currently, Thao is focusing on studying to achieve a high score in the 2023 high school graduation exam to be able to fulfill her dream of passing the Auditing major (Academy of Finance).

“My family has many children so my parents have a hard time. Thanks to the support of the District Youth Union and the Volunteer Association for the community over the past 6 years, I have achieved the results I have today. I feel it is my responsibility to study well to be worthy of the trust of my brothers and sisters,” Thao shared.

The "Foster Children" project was founded by the Volunteer Association for the Community in 2010 with the aim of helping students overcome difficulties to study well across the country. The project has supported 20 students in Ia Grai district since the 2017-2018 school year and is committed to supporting them from the time they are approached until they finish high school. The students supported by the project all have good and excellent academic achievements; many of them have achieved high results in competitions to select excellent students at the district and provincial levels. The project is currently supporting 15 students, 5 of whom have dropped out of school for various reasons and are no longer in the project. It is expected that in the 2023-2024 school year, the project will continue to support 40 disadvantaged 6th grade students in Ia Grai district.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Danh - Chairman of the Volunteer Association for the Community, founder of the "Foster Child" Project - said: "The Association's typical activities aim at sustainable development such as: building houses, building bridges and developing education . If we support the children for a short time, the effectiveness will not be high. The project is implemented to support them long-term, helping them realize their dreams. The name "Foster Child" aims to create a sustainable, long-term relationship between the giver and the recipient, like brothers in a family. From 2010 to now, the project has supported 643 students across the country."

Mr. Nong Hong Phong - Secretary of Ia Grai District Youth Union: "The "Foster Children" project supports 6th and 7th grade students and commits to support them until they graduate from high school. Before each support period, the Project Management Board works with the District Youth Union on the criteria for selecting beneficiaries. In addition to the funding from the Volunteer Association for the Community, the District Youth Union also directs grassroots Youth Union organizations to regularly support 32 disadvantaged students. Hopefully, with this companionship, the path to the light of knowledge for these students will be less arduous."
