(CLO) On November 8, Israel sent two planes to the Netherlands to bring Israeli football fans back after street attacks last night that officials described as anti-Semitic acts.

Clashes broke out on the streets of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, last night. Video on social media showed riot police intervened, while some attackers shouted anti-Israel insults.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said fans of the Maccabi Tel Aviv football club were "attacked, insulted and had fireworks thrown at them". Riot police had to intervene several times to protect them and escort them to their hotel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said the order to dispatch the aircraft came after "a very violent incident" targeting Israeli citizens, following a match between Maccabi and Ajax Amsterdam, which are identified as Jewish clubs.

Police said 57 suspects were arrested after the match as pro-Palestinian protesters tried to reach the Johan Cruyff Arena, despite the city banning protests there.

A witness captured video showing a group of men running near Amsterdam's central station, chasing and attacking others as police sirens blared.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said he was "appalled by the anti-Semitic attacks on Israeli citizens", which he said were "completely unacceptable", and assured Mr Netanyahu by phone that "the perpetrators will be identified and prosecuted".

Anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, head of the largest party in the Dutch government, said he was "ashamed that this could happen in the Netherlands".

Anti-Semitic incidents in the Netherlands have increased since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out in Gaza on 7 October last year, with many Jewish organisations and schools reporting threats and hate mail.
