The information was emphasized by Mr. Vu Ba Phu, Director of the Trade Promotion Agency ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) at the Trade Promotion Conference with the Vietnamese Trade Office System Abroad in August 2025, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade on September 9.
According to Mr. Phu, the import-export target this year assigned by the Government is extremely heavy but also full of expectations. Total export turnover of goods increased by 12% and the trade surplus reached about 30 billion USD. This is an important preparation step to bring the economy into the 2026 - 2030 period with the goal of sustainable growth.
In the first 8 months of the year, the import and export picture has many positive highlights. Total import and export turnover reached nearly 305 billion USD, up 14.4% over the same period. The FDI sector continued to lead with 228 billion USD, while domestic enterprises reached 76.5 billion USD.
Agricultural exports continued to increase, with coffee up 60%, cashew nuts up 16%, and seafood up 11%, but rice exports fell nearly 17% and tea down 10%. Processing and manufacturing industries such as phones, textiles, and footwear continued to maintain double-digit growth.
In terms of markets, exports to the US increased by nearly 28%, India by 50%, and Senegal by 249%. In addition, exports to some ASEAN and European countries decreased, creating a need to diversify markets.

According to Do Ngoc Hung, Vietnam's Trade Counselor in the United States, in recent times, despite many changes in US policies, especially tax policies, businesses have still sought to accelerate and take advantage of opportunities to boost exports, and seek suitable partners and orders. Key product groups such as machinery, equipment, wood and wood products, textiles, and seafood have maintained strong growth, with many items increasing from 15% to more than 100%.
However, according to Mr. Hung, the US market still has many potential challenges, tariffs and rules of origin are major barriers, and trade defense investigations have become increasingly fierce in the first 7 months of the year...
According to Mr. Vu Ba Phu, from now until the end of the year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will coordinate to organize two large industrial and consumer fairs at the National Exhibition Center, with the participation of many international buyers. This is an opportunity for domestic enterprises to introduce products, sign contracts, and expand their distribution networks.
Mr. Do Ngoc Hung also suggested continuing to promote trade agreement negotiations; coordinating with ministries to remove the impact of new policies, especially on seafood; stepping up trade promotion and providing timely information. For seafood, it is necessary to promote a transition mechanism. For wood, businesses must be transparent about the origin and production process, and strengthen forecasting and early warning of trade defense.
