Stable dairy cows, stable farmers' economy

According to Lam Dong Newspaper, in recent years, dairy cows have become a special agricultural sector, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development in Lam Dong.

A typical example is the farm of Mr. Tran Huy Rin (Cat Tien 2 commune), one of the pioneering households to import dairy cows to raise since the end of 2022. With an investment of more than 3 billion VND to build standard barns and buy high-quality breeds from Da Lat Milk Joint Stock Company, he now has a herd of 47 cows, of which 35 give milk with a stable yield of 700kg/day.

“To have high quality milk, I always follow strict care and nutrition processes, from cool, clean barns to balanced diets for each reproductive stage,” Mr. Rin shared.

Thanks to the stable purchase price of 15,000 VND/kg, plus quality bonuses, after only 2 years, his family paid off all debts and started to make a profit. This model also became the motivation for many households in the area to boldly switch from raising beef cattle to raising dairy cows.

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Lam Dong, as of July 2025, the total dairy herd in the province reached 26,220 cows, most concentrated in Don Duong district (17,159 cows) and Duc Trong district (5,427 cows). In 2024, cow milk output reached more than 106,800 tons, an increase of over 10% compared to 2020; the average productivity reached 22 liters/cow/day, higher than the national average.

The total dairy herd in Lam Dong province has recovered to over 26,000 cows.

Linking value chains, ensuring output

Lam Dong currently has 5 enterprises purchasing fresh milk with 18 purchasing stations, along with 3 cooperatives and 2 cooperative groups operating effectively. About 95% of milk production is consumed stably through contracts with "big guys" such as Vinamilk, Dalatmilk, Friesland Campina.

In parallel, the locality has 3 fresh milk processing factories and a cheese production facility, helping to ensure output for farmers, avoiding the risk of "good harvest, low price".

In particular, many farms have applied modern technology such as automatic milking systems, cow health management chips, feed-pushing robots, biogas waste treatment, etc., contributing to improving production efficiency and protecting the environment.

Đặc biệt, năng suất sữa bình quân tại tỉnh Lâm Đồng đạt 22 lít/con/ngày, cao hơn mức trung bình cả nước.

In particular, the average milk yield in Lam Dong province is 22 liters/cow/day, higher than the national average.

Towards the country's largest dairy center

According to Mr. Pham Phi Long, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine of Lam Dong, the dairy industry in the province is gradually developing sustainably thanks to the cooperation between farmers, cooperatives and enterprises. However, disease risks still exist, typically the diarrhea outbreak in 2024, requiring increased monitoring and prevention.

In the coming period, the province continues to orient:

Reduce small-scale farming, develop concentrated scale and apply high technology.

Improve the quality of breeding stock, associated with environmental protection.

Promote value chain linkage, encourage farmers to participate in cooperatives.

Building disease-free zones and applying modern waste treatment technology.

Notably, the high-tech dairy farm and milk processing project in Quang Son with a scale of 50,000 cows (of which 25,000 are milk cows) expected to operate in 2031 will create a big push, making Lam Dong the leading dairy cow center in the country.

With an increasingly stable herd of cows, outstanding productivity, and strong investment in technology and chain linkages, Lam Dong is affirming its determination to build an efficient, sustainable, and modern dairy industry.
