Part of the Euclid space map revealed for the first time

The newly revealed map represents 1% of the Euclid telescope's plan to map the universe. In doing so, Euclid will record the shapes, distances and movements of billions of galaxies across a range of 10 billion light-years. When completed, it will be the largest 3D map of the universe ever created, ESA said.

According to information on the ESA website, the first part of the map records the stars in the Milky Way and galaxies beyond. The images of about 14 million galaxies can be used as a basis for research on the influence of dark energy and dark matter, which make up 95% of the mass and energy of the universe. The picture contains images taken between March 25 and April 8, 2024. During the two weeks, the Euclid telescope photographed a large part of the southern hemisphere sky.

“This stunning image is the first piece of a map that in six years will reveal more than a third of the southern hemisphere sky. This is just 1% of the map, but it is packed with different sources of information that will help scientists discover new ways to describe the universe,” said Valeria Pettorino, a scientist with the Euclid project at ESA.

The image shows faint, pale blue clouds. They are a mixture of gas and dust, and are also known as "galactic cirrus clouds" because they resemble cirrus clouds.

The Euclid telescope was launched into space in July 2023 and began scientific observation operations from February 2024.
