US Marines call 911 for help after losing F-35 fighter jet

"I believe we lost an aircraft in Williamsburg County (South Carolina, USA) today, September 18, 2023," a major at Marine Corps Base Beaufort called the 911 operator at the time of the incident.

“You think you have a plane down in Williamsburg County?” the operator asked again.

"Exactly," the major replied, adding that "we have been searching for the plane but have not found it yet."

The pilot of the ill-fated F-35 fighter also called 911 after successfully ejecting from the plane and parachuting into the backyard of a home in the area.

"Ma'am, I'm a military pilot and I just ejected from the plane," the pilot said on the phone. "I just parachuted to the ground. Can you send an ambulance?" the pilot said.

The call recording shows that the 911 operator was uncertain how to handle the incident, given the limited information about the crash site.

Marines later found the plane's wreckage in a field north of Charleston, also in the state.

The cause of the plane crash is still unknown, but it is known that the incident caused nearly $100 million in damage to US forces.
