Plane turned back due to engine failure while flying

AFP news agency reported on September 3 that Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific temporarily grounded its Airbus A350 aircraft for inspection after an engine failure was first discovered, forcing a flight to Zurich, Switzerland, to turn back.

Cathay is inspecting all 48 of its Airbus A350 aircraft and “some aircraft will be grounded for a few days,” the airline said in a statement late on Monday. The airline has canceled 24 return flights operating through Tuesday, it added.

The move comes after a Cathay Pacific flight to Zurich on September 2 was forced to turn back and the airline discovered a problem with an engine part, but did not specify which part.

"This is the first such component failure on any A350 aircraft worldwide ," the airline said. A fleet-wide inspection found several similar engine parts that needed to be replaced, Cathay Pacific said.

Cathay Pacific's chief technical officer Keith Brown said the company was in contact with Hong Kong's aviation authorities as well as aircraft and engine manufacturers. "Each aircraft is undergoing rigorous inspections. Once completed, aircraft cleared for service will return to service, while those identified with technical issues will undergo further repairs and maintenance," he said.

Boeing orders unexpectedly outstrip Airbus

Cathay Pacific is one of the largest operators of the Airbus A350 jetliner in the world.

According to Reuters, when asked, an Airbus spokesman asked the press to contact Cathay Pacific and Rolls-Royce (UK), the engine manufacturer.

Rolls-Royce said it was aware of the incident and pledged to work closely with Cathay Pacific, Airbus and the authorities to conduct an investigation.

Rolls-Royce shares fell 6.47% in London on September 2. The engine maker said it had invested more than 1 billion pounds this year to upgrade its line of commercial aircraft engines.

Last November, Emirates (UAE) Airlines CEO Tim Clark expressed concerns about the durability and longevity of the A350's engines.
