CSB 8022 is the third patrol ship transferred by the US to Vietnam, following the two previous ships, CSB 8020 (formerly USCGC Morgenthau, delivered in 2017) and CSB 8021 (formerly USCGC John Midgett, delivered in 2020). CSB 8022, formerly the Mellon of the US Coast Guard, departed from Seattle, Washington state, transited in Hawaii and Guam before docking at Ninh Hoa port, Khanh Hoa province.

At the reception ceremony, the US Chargé d'Affaires in Vietnam, Ms. Courtney Beale, and Major General Ngo Binh Minh, Commander of Coast Guard Region 3, welcomed the CSB 8022, marking the ship's official arrival in Vietnam and joining the Coast Guard.
“Today’s ship transfer reflects the continued growth of security cooperation between our two countries over the past 30 years. The United States and Vietnam respect each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political systems, and are firmly committed to supporting a shared vision of peace, stability, prosperity, and security in the Indo- Pacific region,” Beale said.
According to the US Embassy in Vietnam, the transfer of the ship is part of a series of cooperation activities to enhance Vietnam’s capacity in maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Through this, the two countries continue to strengthen their partnership, actively contributing to peace and stability in the region.
The handover of ship CSB 8022 not only contributes to strengthening Vietnam's capacity to protect its maritime sovereignty, but also demonstrates the two countries' increasingly strong commitment to defense cooperation, based on mutual respect and common interests.
