US reveals target of sanctions against Russia; Russian Defense Minister informs about war

In an interview with the Financial Times published today, December 1, US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt said Washington is aiming to halve Russia's oil and gas revenues by the end of this decade, emphasizing that Western sanctions against Moscow will need to be maintained "for many years to come".

In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that Moscow is assuming that the US and its allies' sanctions against Russia will last for many years, but that US influence on the world economy is waning.

"We are sure that these sanctions will last for many years. Even without a statement from the (US) representative, we knew this. We assumed this when we drew up our policy," Mr. Peskov told reporters.

"We also believe that the United States will continue to try to put pressure on Russia and the entire system of economic and trade relations, essentially destroying the form of these relations," Peskov added.

To compensate for the decline in trade with the West, Russia is turning to China, India and other markets in the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America, according to Reuters. "The world economy is not limited to the US economy," Mr. Peskov asserted, saying that China is catching up with the US.

"The world is much more diverse than the US, so the US-centric world is ending and a period of diversity is beginning, including in international economic relations," Mr. Peskov said.

Moscow has long signaled that the Russian economy is stronger than expected in the face of unprecedented Western sanctions over Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.

Regarding the war situation, RIA news agency reported that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced today that the country's army is advancing in all directions in Ukraine. Mr. Shoigu said Russia will hold a naval exercise called Ocean-2024 next year, according to Reuters.

In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today that Moscow saw no signs of Kyiv's readiness to move towards a political solution and there was no reason for Russia to change the goals of its "special military operation" in Ukraine, according to Reuters.

There is currently no information about Ukraine's reaction to Russia's statement.
