On December 19, at the area displaying US military equipment at the Vietnam International Defense Exhibition 2024, US officials discussed US-Vietnam defense cooperation.
This year, the US sent a delegation twice as large as in 2022 to the exhibition, led by Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the Indo- Pacific Command.

Cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war between Vietnam and the US has come a long way. Last September, during the visit of Minister of National Defense Phan Van Giang to the US, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced that the US Department of Defense will continue to support Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of war and dioxin detoxification.
Mr. Jedidiah Royal said that the two countries' defense cooperation has been increasingly strengthened, contributing to maintaining a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. The US's participation in the exhibition demonstrates the growing relationship with Vietnam.
Mr. Jedidiah Royal informed about the opportunities for defense industry cooperation between the two countries in a number of fields.
“We always welcome opportunities for stronger cooperation with Vietnam and countries in the region, both bilaterally and multilaterally,” he affirmed.
Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the Indo-Pacific Command, was impressed by the magnificent and splendid performance of the opening ceremony, which demonstrated the excellence and precision of the Vietnamese Army.
The Admiral spoke about the cooperation between the two countries in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, military medicine, clearing unexploded ordnance, overcoming the consequences of dioxin, and repatriating the remains of American soldiers. Mr. Samuel Paparo shared about the bright future of the relationship between the two countries, cooperating with each other in the spirit of equality, respecting the sovereignty and independence of each country, ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Admiral Samuel Paparo was pleased with the strong development of the relationship between the two countries, especially the upgrading of the relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership last September; this is "a source of great pride for both the US and Vietnam".
Admiral Samuel Paparo assessed that Vietnam has an equal role with all countries. Vietnam is “independent, protects its own interests and contributes to the international community”. “Vietnam has participated in humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and military medicine cooperation activities, contributing to promoting ASEAN’s central role, promoting a rules-based international order, for stability, independence, and development in the region.
US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper expressed his impression of the way Vietnam organized the exhibition. Mr. Marc Knapper added that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's message about cooperation and promoting friendship for mutual development resonated greatly, especially with the US.
"We want to deepen our friendship and expand cooperation with Vietnam. We want major US defense companies to work here, work with Vietnam, with Vietnamese partners in joint production, technology transfer...", the Ambassador shared.
The US's participation in the exhibition demonstrates the commitment of the US Government and defense industry to supporting Vietnam in diversifying and modernizing its military.
