In 2022, consumers in more than 50 countries and territories consumed a record 121.2 billion servings of instant noodles, according to the World Instant Noodles Association based in Osaka, Japan.

Several countries and territories with a tradition of using instant noodles still occupy high positions in the consumption rankings as usual, led by China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Vietnam and Japan ranked fourth and fifth.

Third place went to India, a sign that instant noodles are becoming more popular in countries and territories that were previously thought of as having a tradition of consuming this type of food.

Demand for instant noodles in Mexico jumped 17.2% in 2021, when many people turned to instant noodles during Covid-19 travel restrictions. But in 2022, the figure still increased by 11%.

In addition to freshly prepared noodles, Americans are also starting to embrace instant noodles. According to the Guardian , this is a way for households to reduce financial pressure due to the cost of living crisis.

Nikkei quoted Nissin Foods as saying that "middle-class consumers who previously did not eat instant noodles are now incorporating them into their daily lives."

Recently, Nissin and rival Toyo Suisan announced that they will build new production facilities in the US and Mexico between now and 2025 to meet soaring demand.

"The number of consumers who regularly eat instant noodles is increasing, and we will increase flavor diversity," Toyo Suisan said in a statement to Nikkei .

"Nissin Foods has seen steady sales growth year over year, especially over the past five years, thanks to unprecedented demand for our products," said Michael Price, president of Nissin Foods America.
