NTSB documents and photos show Boeing employees removed four bolts from locations on the side door of a Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft during inspections at its Renton, Washington, plant ahead of delivery to Alaska Airlines in October 2023.
The inspection was carried out to replace five damaged rivets in the cabin. Additional images taken after the rivets were replaced show that at least three bolts were not returned to their original positions.
'One problem after another' with Boeing
Boeing took steps to block off what would have been the plane's emergency exit, as the Boeing 737 MAX 9 already has enough emergency exits.
On January 5, a side door panel was blown off the cabin of an Alaska Airlines flight as it took off from Portland, Oregon, bound for Ontario, California. Fortunately, only a few people suffered minor injuries.
Alaska Airlines also reported missing parts as it conducts an internal investigation following the January 5 plane door incident.
And United Airlines, which operates the most 737 MAX 9s with 79, also found that bolts needed to be tightened during inspections.
