Many hospitals accept 100% of patients' test results from elsewhere.

According to the Ministry of Health, many hospitals across the country have connected and reused test results at a high rate, thereby saving a significant amount of costs for patients.

On September 29, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health ) held a conference to summarize the project "Strengthening the capacity of the medical laboratory quality management system for the period 2016-2025".

Mr. Ha Anh Duc - Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) - said that according to statistics in 2024, costs for testing and paraclinical examination account for 19.1% of the total costs for medical examination and treatment under health insurance, equivalent to nearly 30,000 billion VND/year.

It is estimated that reusing just 1-2% of paraclinical tests can save at least 300-600 billion VND/year.

Strict quality management for the connection and reuse of medical test results brings important meaning and great benefits to patients, medical facilities and the health insurance system.

When test results are linked, patients will reduce medical examination and treatment costs and will not have to redo tests (blood, urine, imaging...) when transferring from one hospital to another or for re-examination.

At the same time, it saves time and effort, no need to wait to take samples, perform tests and wait for results again from the beginning, making the medical examination and treatment process faster and more convenient, reducing hospital overload...

For physicians, it helps improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment. Doctors can easily access their lifetime test history (via electronic health records), helping to make more accurate diagnoses and continuously monitor treatment effectiveness.

According to reports, many hospitals have connected and reused test results at a high rate, thereby saving a significant amount of costs for patients, typically:

Tu Du Hospital has 100% of cases where patients come for examination and treatment and have had tests (complete blood cell analysis, blood clotting, biochemistry, microbiology, HIV, HBsAg, syphilis) from outside medical facilities, all have their test results reused if they are still valid.

At Gia Dinh People's Hospital, 100% of patients with test results and diagnostic imaging are referred to the hospital for examination and treatment; Thai Nguyen Central Hospital: more than 85%; Friendship Hospital 100%; Children's Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh City 95%; Nguyen Trai Hospital 80%; Central Obstetrics Hospital, Central Acupuncture... have implemented the reuse of results when receiving patients for examination and treatment.

"I believe that with the above results, in the coming time, the work of ensuring the quality of the medical testing system will continue to be strengthened along with the trend of comprehensive digital transformation, the connection and reuse of results will be favorable and have new breakthroughs," Mr. Duc emphasized.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Khoa - Deputy Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) - said that according to reported data, up to now, nearly 500/3,000 laboratories nationwide have been standardized, evaluated, certified, and have publicized test results, thereby promoting consistency and improving the entire national medical testing system.

The Ministry of Health requires units to synchronize test results with the implementation of electronic medical records at facilities; apply common codes to integrate techniques and terminology with electronic medical records.

The Departments of Health continue to direct the implementation of work to improve the quality of testing laboratories, inspect, evaluate, and publicize the quality levels of all testing laboratories under their management authority, which must meet standards according to regulations of the Ministry of Health, and implement the connection of test results in sync with the implementation of electronic medical records at facilities...
