Artificial superintelligence (ASI) or superhuman intelligence could emerge by 2030, with capabilities that can only surpass humans in some aspects but not all.
This is the opinion of Mr. Zhang Peng, CEO of Zhipu AI, one of the largest artificial intelligence (AI) startups in China.
Speaking on September 30 on the occasion of Zhipu AI introducing the large language model GLM-4.6 with many outstanding features, Mr. Zhang Peng said that the concept of ASI is still too vague to determine a specific timeline.
“Achieving or surpassing human intelligence by 2030 would mean being superior in some areas, but still falling far behind in many others,” he said.
The AI industry is speculating about when the technology will surpass human intelligence.
Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicted that ASI could be born by the end of this decade, while SoftBank Group leader Masayoshi Son said the timeline could fall in 2035.
Founded in 2019, Zhipu AI has attracted significant attention from the tech community and has emerged as one of the leading enterprises in the AI race in China (also known as tech "unicorns").
OpenAI named Zhipu AI as a competitor last June, part of China's efforts to promote and expand its domestically developed AI models internationally.
Zhipu AI's overseas revenue is growing, but the company has no intention of directly competing with US AI models in the consumer subscription space, Mr. Zhang said.
Instead, he noted that Zhipu AI is focused on enterprise customers. Zhipu AI recently launched a developer subscription plan to expand its direct revenue stream from users.
Essentially, ASI is a high-level form of artificial intelligence (AI). ASI not only mimics or understands human intelligence and behavior, but also surpasses human capabilities and intelligence./.
