Strengthening English teaching
In the context of increasingly deep international integration, proficiency in foreign languages, especially English, has become an essential requirement for the young generation . The policy of making English the second language from the 2025 school year is considered an important step, demonstrating the strategic vision of the education sector.
While middle school and high school have a ready foundation, elementary school, especially first and second graders, still needs careful preparation to keep up. In preschool, children are just "getting acquainted" with English through play, so when entering first grade, systematic learning makes many parents worried.
Exciting class of teachers and students at Nguyen Tao Primary School.
Ms. Le Thi Thuy Tran (Hamlet 19, Tan Thanh Ward), whose child just entered grade 1 at Quang Trung Primary School, shared: "In kindergarten, my child just played and studied. Now in grade 1, English is taught more seriously, I'm afraid my child won't be able to keep up, so I'm thinking of sending him to a center for extra classes."
Understanding that mentality, many primary schools have had plans from the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. If students are behind schedule, they will receive tutoring at school; teachers will also explore new teaching methods to make lessons more engaging and easier.
Ms. Le Lan Phuong, an English teacher at Nguyen Tao Primary School, said: “Grades 1 and 2 are just getting acquainted to create interest, from grade 3 onwards they will study according to the compulsory program of the Ministry of Education and Training . In addition to practicing all 4 skills of listening - speaking - reading - writing, teachers also apply new methods to help students communicate confidently, gradually making English the second language in school.”
Vice Chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Luan inspected school facilities in Hoa Thanh ward before the new school year.
According to the direction of the Ministry of Education and Training, the introduction of English as a second language will not only stop at basic communication, but will also increase bilingual teaching in some science subjects, expand high-quality schools, and apply digital technology and artificial intelligence in teaching and learning. English teachers will also be trained to meet international standards.
Mr. Truong Van Hai, Principal of Nguyen Tao Primary School, emphasized: "The school will innovate methods, evaluate students based on their abilities, improve the quality of STEM - STEAM education, apply AI, especially focus on teaching English in grades 1 and 2, creating a solid foundation for this subject to truly become a second language."
Concerns about boarding facilities
Along with the foreign language issue, the boarding issue is always a “hot” issue at the beginning of each school year. Currently, the whole province has 512/520 public kindergartens and primary schools teaching 2 sessions/day, reaching 98.5% (primary schools alone have 316/324 schools). However, the number of schools organizing boarding is still low: only 232/520, of which primary schools only reach 43/324 schools.
According to the Department of Education and Training, to meet the need for two sessions a day, the whole province needs to add 55 preschool classrooms, 71 primary school classrooms, 519 secondary school classrooms and 462 high school classrooms.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nguyen, Director of the Department of Education and Training, said that the total budget for the Project to organize 2 sessions/day, boarding at all levels of public education is 942 billion VND, from the State budget, other legal sources and socialization. "The project will contribute to reducing the burden of extra classes, especially for students in remote and isolated areas; at the same time, building friendly and modern schools" - he emphasized.
Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Minh Luan visited and encouraged students in the excellent student training team of Dinh Binh Secondary School.
In recent times, the province has mobilized resources to invest in kitchens, dining halls, airy resting rooms, etc. for students. This is not only to meet immediate needs but also a long-term investment for future generations.
Comrade Nguyen Minh Luan, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, said: "Boarding is still difficult. In the coming time, with many resources from the budget, to mobilizing donors... to have more educational institutions organize boarding, organize lunch, canteen, resting place, hygiene and learning conditions. In a determined spirit, how to make all primary educational institutions organize boarding. Educational institutions from junior high school level and above are also encouraged, educational institutions, education sector to pay attention to implementing boarding classes".
Although there are still many concerns, the beginning of the new school year also opens up hope. The determination of the education sector, the cooperation of parents and society is the driving force to overcome difficulties, towards a happy and sustainable learning environment for teachers and students.
