Thanh Hoa's agricultural sector has just overcome a "stormy" year, bringing the growth rate to 4.17%, contributing significantly to the province's total gross regional domestic product (GRDP) growth rate of 12.16% in 2024.
Farmers in Thieu Vu commune (Thieu Hoa) harvest the 2024 winter-spring rice crop.
Looking back at the 2024 crop production, when the main crops were preparing for peak harvest, in September, consecutive storms No. 3 and No. 4 hit. Although the storm did not make landfall in Thanh Hoa province, heavy rains caused by prolonged post-storm circulation damaged nearly 3,322 hectares of rice, nearly 5,977 hectares of various vegetables and annual crops... According to Mr. Vu Quang Trung, Head of the Provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection: "To promptly overcome the effects caused by storms and floods and protect the 2024 crop production from adverse weather conditions, the agricultural sector has actively coordinated with localities to mobilize maximum human resources and machinery to thoroughly harvest the area of rice that is 80% or more ripe and other crops that are ready to be harvested. With the implementation of timely solutions, the winter-spring rice crop still achieved an average yield of 56 quintals/ha".
In 2024, the crop sector will overcome difficulties, and localities will pay attention to developing and maintaining more than 80,000 hectares of production linkage models associated with product consumption. The whole province will maintain and develop intensive crop areas and concentrated production areas that bring high efficiency and value, such as: 150,000 hectares of high-yield, high-quality rice; 20,000 hectares of intensive corn; 12,000 hectares of intensive sugarcane; 14,000 hectares of safe vegetables; 420 hectares of high-tech ornamental flowers and plants; 14,500 hectares of concentrated fruit trees; 18,500 hectares of animal feed trees... Plant protection work is regularly monitored closely for weather and pest developments; forecasts, forecasts and pest control services are ensured to be timely, effective and safe. Thanks to that, the value of products obtained per hectare of cultivated land in 2024 is estimated at 125 million VND, an increase of 5 million VND/ha compared to 2023.
In livestock farming, the province maintains a herd of 156,000 buffaloes, 258,000 cows, 1.35 million pigs, and 27.2 million poultry. Disease prevention and control work has been carried out resolutely by the agricultural sector and localities, with timely guidance and good control, so no dangerous epidemics have occurred in livestock and poultry. The province has 3 more modern livestock projects that have been completed and put into operation with a scale of 2.4 million sows and 138,000 pigs/year: the high-quality pig farm of Asean International Investment Joint Stock Company; the industrial livestock farm of Lam Son Nhu Xuan Joint Stock Company; the high-tech closed-loop pig farm and plant variety production of G8 Company.
Attracting potential enterprises, organizations and individuals to invest in agricultural production creates the premise for "Transforming from agricultural production to agricultural economy " that the province and the agricultural sector are focusing on implementing. In 2024 alone, 155 new enterprises were established in the agricultural sector. The whole province currently has 1,484 enterprises, 2 cooperative unions and 783 cooperatives in operation, 1,058 farms, 1,286 cooperative groups in agriculture and millions of dynamic production entities in the province are continuing to make efforts to develop production and business.

According to Mr. Cao Van Cuong, Provincial Party Committee member, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development: "2025 is the last year of the 2020-2025 term, which is of special importance to successfully complete the goals and tasks set out in the Resolution of the 19th Provincial Party Congress. The unstable economic situation, the world, natural disasters, storms and floods, climate change are still constant risks... causing many difficulties for the economy in general and the agricultural sector in particular. Anticipating these difficulties, the agricultural sector continues to restructure towards improving productivity, quality, efficiency, competitiveness and sustainable development; applying high and smart technology and implementing land consolidation to form specialized areas for large-scale, highly efficient agricultural production along the value chain from production, processing to product consumption.
