Heaving across the old bridge during the flood season

In Dong Le commune, Quang Tri province, there are currently 3 bridges that are seriously degraded. All three bridges have expired but are still "struggling" to serve the travel needs of thousands of people.

In Kim Tien village, the suspension bridge over Gianh River, the only connection to Highway 15 and the commune center, was built in 2001 and repaired in 2014. Now it is dilapidated, the cables are rusty, and the pillars are crooked. During the school year, about 200 students pass through every day, and parents take turns picking them up and dropping them off in a worried mood.

Kim Tien village suspension bridge is in disrepair.

“The whole village has only one exit. Every rainy season, everyone is scared. People really want a solid bridge so they can cross safely,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Luu (70 years old).

Not only is it a school route, it is also a vital route for transporting goods, especially acacia and cajuput, the main source of income for the people. The narrow bridge surface and low load capacity make transportation costly and pose a constant risk of insecurity.

The suspension bridge pier over Dong Tan sub-area has an open mouth and rusty iron pillars.

Similarly, the suspension bridge connecting Sub-area 3 with Dong Tan Sub-area, built in 1997, has rotten planks and the bridge surface shakes violently. Nearly 700 people still have to travel every day on the bridge, which has passed its use-by date.

Mr. Phan Xuan Chien, Head of Dong Tan sub-region, said: "The bridge was included in the public investment portfolio but due to lack of capital, it has not been implemented. Studying, trading, emergency... all depend on this bridge."

Below the suspension bridges all pillars are lifted off the ground.

The most worrying thing is the pontoon bridge across Gianh River from Thuan Hoa commune to Dong Le commune center. Every rainy season, the water level rises, the bridge has to be dismantled, the whole area is cut off. Emergency treatment for patients or evacuation of people are difficult, sometimes completely isolated. The bridge is also old, many of the pontoons are broken and degraded.

The pontoon bridge is also degraded and traffic is prohibited during flood season.

Mr. Dinh Tien Dung, Chairman of Dong Le Commune People's Committee, said: "All three bridges are past their expiration date and no longer ensure safety. In particular, villages in Thuan Hoa area are isolated almost every year because the pontoon bridges are not working. The locality hopes that the superiors will survey and support the construction of replacement hard bridges, so that people can travel safely and develop the economy , especially when the rainy and stormy season is approaching."
