The good news is that new research just published in the scientific journal Nutrients has found that a widely used supplement could be a savior for diabetes, according to science news site ScitechDaily.

Scientists at Cruzeiro do Sul University (Brazil) conducted research on mice with high blood sugar due to insulin resistance - a condition similar to type 2 diabetes.

Results showed that fish oil helped reverse insulin resistance by regulating inflammation, thereby improving blood sugar control.

How does fish oil help lower blood sugar?

Researchers say omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may help lower blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing inflammation.

Specifically, they found that supplementing with fish oil three times per week for eight weeks helped diabetic mice reduce insulin resistance, while also improving blood sugar levels, inflammatory markers, and blood lipid profiles, including total cholesterol, bad cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Hope for diabetics

This study offers hope for type 2 diabetes patients, said study author Dr. Rui Curi, who works at Cruzeiro do Sul University.

Experiments conducted on Goto-Kakizaki rats, a model of type 2 diabetes similar to humans, found that insulin resistance could be reduced in these animals by shifting the inflammatory response of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, from a pro-inflammatory state to an anti-inflammatory state. This process is similar to how people with insulin resistance respond to omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, he said.

Dr. Curi said changes in lymphocytes—white blood cells that help protect the body from infection and disease—had a huge impact on other cells of the immune system, causing a knock-on effect.

Inflammation is one of the major risk factors for diabetes.

Most people with diabetes have inflammation, which affects insulin signaling pathways, promoting insulin resistance, explains Dr. Curi.

Therefore, fish oil supplementation reversed the inflammation, demonstrating a significant anti-inflammatory effect. Therefore, scientists believe that the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on lymphocytes, adjusting them from an inflammatory state to an anti-inflammatory state, may have triggered the process of reducing insulin resistance, according to ScitechDaily.
