Scientists have found a new way to detect brain cancer that is faster and less invasive than surgical biopsies.

Just 100 microliters of blood is needed to perform this novel “liquid biopsy” method, and within an hour it can detect biomarkers associated with gliomas – the most common and dangerous type of brain tumor.

This method outperforms all other existing tests for gliomas with excellent accuracy.

The breakthrough is the result of research by American and Australian scientists led by the University of Notre Dame (USA). To detect molecules released from cancer tumor cells, the researchers embedded a super-sensitive biochip in a sample of untreated blood plasma.

The chip, which costs less than $2 and is equipped with a tiny sensor the size of a ballpoint pen tip, detects the presence of cancer biomarkers with high accuracy.

The team hopes the new testing method can be applied to many other types of cancer.
