These days, coming to Phieng Cam, you will see on the hillsides, in front of houses or along the roadsides… the brilliant yellow color of rose gardens. The rose season here has begun, people are excited about this year’s rose harvest and good prices.
From the commune center, follow the winding concrete road to the rose garden of Ms. Lo Thi Kim's family in Nong Tau Thai village. The rose garden is planted right next to the house, green and full of fruit. Ms. Kim shared: In 2014, seeing some households in the commune growing seedless persimmons for a stable income, I learned to follow suit. Persimmon trees are very suitable for the soil and climate here, can withstand drought and cold well, and produce sweet fruit, so traders buy them right at the garden. Currently, my family has 1 hectare of persimmons intercropped with other fruit trees, each year harvesting nearly 10 tons of fruit. This season, persimmons have started to enter the season, traders from Phu Tho province come to buy them at an average price of 15-17 thousand VND/kg.
Continuing to visit the rose garden of Mr. Song A Phenh's family, Phieng Phu village, his family currently has 500 rose trees, of which 300 are being harvested. Mr. Phenh said: The rose tree is not picky about soil, it can be planted in a concentrated or interspersed area at the foot of hills, along ponds, streams or dry fields. The care is also quite simple, just need to fertilize, weed, no need to prune or shape the canopy but the tree still produces fruit regularly. Every year, my family harvests more than 8 tons of fruit. This year, traders come to the garden to buy the roses, the family saves the effort of bringing them to sell.
Phieng Cam Commune is located at an altitude of over 1,000m above sea level, with a cool climate and fertile soil. Since 2000, the State has supported people to plant more than 500 persimmon trees. Initially, people only planted them around their houses for food, but realizing that the trees were suitable for the soil and climate, they expanded the area to grow them commercially.
Currently, the whole commune has more than 30 hectares of soaked persimmons concentrated in Nong Tau Thai, Phieng Phu, Nong Tau Mong villages, with an output of over 600 tons of fruit per year. Seedless persimmons bloom from April and are harvested from late September to mid-October. Ripe persimmons have a beautiful yellow color, but when picked, they are still astringent and inedible. After soaking in clean water for 3-4 days and nights, the fruit will lose its astringent taste and turn sweet; at that point, just wash and drain to enjoy.
Previously, people often sold persimmons in retail or to local traders at unstable prices. Now, there are traders from provinces such as Phu Tho, Hung Yen , Thai Nguyen who come to buy directly from the garden, even depositing to buy the whole garden when the fruit is still young. This year, the price of soaked persimmons is good, thanks to that, people are confident to invest in care, helping to increase productivity and quality.
In addition, recently there has been a trend of playing with fruit rose branches to decorate the space. Each rose branch can keep its beauty for 1-2 weeks, the care is as simple as cut flowers, just cut the base, trim and change the water daily.
Mr. Dang Tien Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phieng Cam Commune, said: The commune has coordinated with specialized agencies to guide people on techniques for planting and caring for persimmons to improve quality and yield. At the same time, actively seeking partners to support product consumption. Currently, the commune is piloting a production model associated with deep processing, such as dried persimmons, crispy dried persimmons, establishing a persimmon growing cooperative, building OCOP products and promoting the Phieng Cam seedless persimmon brand. The goal is to expand the market, help people develop the economy , and increase income from persimmon trees in a sustainable way.
After many years of being attached to Phieng Cam land, the soaked persimmon tree has affirmed its quality and economic efficiency. The Phieng Cam soaked persimmon brand is increasingly known by many consumers, expanding consumption, increasing people's income and promoting local socio-economic development.
