At the same time, this is also the goal that the Vietnamese Sports industry always aims for, to contribute to improving physical strength and raising the stature of the entire population.

The Party's humanistic viewpoint

Resolution 72 clearly states a guiding viewpoint of profound humanity: Health is the most precious asset of human beings, the most important foundation for everyone's happiness, for the survival of the nation and the prosperous and sustainable development of the country. Therefore, protecting, caring for and improving people's health must be considered the goal, driving force, top political task, and priority in all development strategies. This is the responsibility of the entire political system, of the whole society and of each citizen.

People are always placed at the center, fully and equally enjoying health care services. The Resolution especially emphasizes the priority of caring for children, the poor, policy subjects and ensuring gender equality. Along with that, our Party promotes the spirit of "prevention is better than cure", encourages a healthy lifestyle and builds a culture of health care in the community.

One of the key solutions to improve health is to promote the movement of physical exercise. On March 27, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh called on all people to exercise, affirming: "A strong people makes a prosperous country. I hope that all our people will try to exercise", and he himself set a good example when emphasizing: "I myself exercise every day". This viewpoint has been steadfastly maintained by our Party for the past 80 years. The work of taking care of people's health has always been focused on and the Sports and Physical Education sector has constantly made efforts to contribute to improving people's health and physical strength.

The sports movement is developing widely.

In recent times, the mass sports movement across the country has made strong strides. Sports activities have been promoted among all classes of people, especially teenagers, students, armed forces, farmers and the elderly. The campaign "All people exercise following the example of great Uncle Ho" has taken place enthusiastically, creating a competitive atmosphere to exercise health in all localities.

Many traditional sports and folk games have been restored and developed; simple and suitable forms of exercise such as jogging, walking, health care, badminton, chess, martial arts, mini football, pickleball, etc. have attracted a large number of people to participate. Many mass sports events have also been organized on a large scale, creating a buzz such as the Olympic Running Day for the health of all people, marathons, the Safe Swimming program to prevent drowning, football and volleyball tournaments, etc. Through these activities, people are increasingly aware of the role of physical exercise in improving health, preventing diseases and improving the quality of life.

In particular, after the Covid-19 pandemic, physical exercise has become an essential need for many people, contributing to improving health and resistance in the community. The effectiveness of the mass sports movement is also clearly demonstrated through impressive numbers. By 2024, 37.5% of the country's population regularly practiced sports (up from 35.5% in 2021) and 28.3% of the total number of households met the "sports family" standard (compared to 26.8% in 2021).

Physical education and sports activities in schools have been given special attention. In recent years, the Vietnam Sports Department (formerly the General Department of Sports) has signed many cooperation programs with the Departments, Ministries and branches to develop the training movement in each specific target group.

Typically, in the 2022-2026 period, there will be coordination programs with the Ministry of Education and Training on school sports; with the Ministry of National Defense on sports activities in the army and militia; with the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on organizing cultural and sports activities for young people; with the Vietnam Association of the Elderly on promoting sports movements for the elderly. At the same time, coordination programs with the Ministry of Public Security, the Ethnic Committee (now the Ministry of Ethnic Affairs and Religion) and other mass organizations are also being implemented, forming a network to promote the widespread physical training movement.

Resolution 72 of the Politburo has set out many specific tasks and solutions to continue promoting the role of physical education and sports in improving people's health. First of all, it is necessary to promote propaganda, raise awareness of self-training, form health care habits for each person and community, towards building a "health culture" in the whole society. The Resolution also agreed to choose World Health Day (April 7) every year as "National Health Day" to encourage everyone to actively participate in physical training.

In addition, the Party and State will focus on planning, investing in the construction and improving the effectiveness of public cultural and sports institutions, creating favorable conditions for people in all regions to have a convenient space to practice. In addition, Resolution 72 requires the effective implementation of national programs and strategies on improving the intelligence, physical strength, stature and longevity of Vietnamese people as well as the National Nutrition Strategy and the School Health Program. In parallel, physical education in schools needs to be further promoted, incorporating health and nutrition education into the curriculum at all levels in an appropriate and practical manner.

Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW is an important milestone, continuing to affirm the special attention of the Party and State to people's health. The orientations and solutions proposed by the Resolution will create a strong driving force for the sports movement to develop more deeply and widely, meeting the needs of people to improve their health.

With the synchronous participation of all levels and sectors and the active response from all classes of people, Vietnamese sports will certainly have new steps forward, making practical contributions to improving the physical strength and stature of Vietnamese people and building a healthy and prosperous Vietnam in the future.
