Fierce debate in Parliament, Prime Minister Trudeau struggles to overcome first major "hurdle"

On September 25, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau survived a vote of no confidence, the first major test for the Liberal minority government after nine years in power.

After a heated debate, the Canadian Parliament voted 211 in favor and 120 against.

“We are going through a really difficult time,” admitted Prime Minister Trudeau. “I will continue to fight.”

However, Mr. Trudeau and the ruling Liberal Party will continue to face more challenges in the coming days, when the Conservative Party announced that it would soon overthrow the current government to move towards holding an early election.

Currently, the Liberal Party still holds the most seats in the National Assembly with 153 seats, compared to 119 seats for the Conservative Party, 33 seats for the Quebec bloc and 25 seats for the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP).

Previously, Prime Minister Trudeau's ruling coalition was in a fragile position in Parliament after the NDP cancelled its coalition agreement with the Liberal Party in early September.

Bloc Quebecois is also demanding concessions from the ruling Liberals in exchange for its support in Parliament.

Meanwhile, with a lead in recent opinion polls, opposition Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre is trying to push for an early election and is expected to propose at least two more no-confidence votes.
